The opening performance of the annual festival is a spectacular hybrid of baroque and contemporary art in one opera
The third edition of Le French May returns next month with a grand opening performance of La Double Coquette, an ambitious project that combines baroque music with contemporary music, specifically, Antoine Dauvergne’s first score for the opéra comique (1753) with modern ‘additions’ by composer Gérard Pesson, into an updated libretto by French poet Pierre Alferi.
Essentially, the performance will stage a modern story reminiscent of a farce by French dramatist Marivaux, with two women competing for the same fickle lover. The opera is a spectacular mixture of the past and present, performed by the award-winning Amarillis Ensemble plus three acting singers. The costumes add a vibrant contemporary element to the performance and were designed by renowned visual artist, Annette Messager.
