Fragments is the latest solo exhibition featuring artwork from contemporary American artist Lauren Matsumoto. The artist’s work is combination of traditional painting and drawing techniques, with collages incorporated to create landscapes that tell a story. Matsumoto’s acrylic paintings and mixed-media works on paper often include ‘fragments’ of history such as antique photographs, drawings from out-of-print erotic magazines, and images of old and unused items.

Matsumoto explains: “The found imagery and my sketchbook drawings then get combined into a painting as formal elements. I include forms cut out of discarded junk mail or magazines. Therefore, by incorporating discarded materials, I re-use our cultural remnants, employing fragments of what we leave behind as a civilisation.”
