Coinciding with the 100th anniversary of Leica, the annual camera auction is expected to fetch over HK$40 million

Leica is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2014, and the 3rd annual L&H Photographica Spring Auction will take place to coincide with this important milestone. To be held at the Library and Lounge in the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong on May 3, the auction will present some incredible vintage cameras across 288 lots, worth over HK$40 million.

Some of the highlights of the auction include two cameras previously owned by famed photographers Eric Schaal and Jay Maisel. These include a fully original MP Black Paint (MP-141) used by Schaal up to a year before his death – to give an estimation of value, a previous auction saw the same model sold for HK$5.4 million at the last L&H auction, the highest hammer price of the event.

Some other highlights for photography fiends include cameras with intriguing history, such as the Hasselblad 500EL, designed for use during the Lunar Mission of Apollo 11 in 1969, or the gold-plated and diamond Leica M6 ordered to commemorate the 50th birthday of His Majesty Sultan of Brunei in 1996.

The vice president of Leica Historica, Lars Netopil, will be present at the auction to share his experience as a vintage camera collector. The public can preview the lots on offer from April 30 to May 2, and on the morning of the auction on May 3, at Windsor House in Causeway Bay.
