In the latest series of talks at the Sheung Wan museum, Aric Chen, curator of design and architecture at M+, will explore the culture of the city through its iconic neon signs

Over a year has passed since M+ held its wildly successful NEONSIGNS.HK exhibition, an initiative exploring the cultural significance of Hong Kong’s neon signage that was entirely curated and exhibited online.

In the time since, there has been a steady decline of these iconic relics as they have been quietly taken down all throughout the city. This July, curator of design and architecture at M+ Aric Chen will be hosting an intimate talk to reignite the conversation surrounding the humble neon sign and its contributions to the collective memory of the city’s inhabitants and to the identity of the urban landscape.

Whether it’s seen through its presence in cinema and visual art, or simply as beautiful graphic design and typography, there is a place for this craft – and we are looking forward to hearing how Chen tells a story of our home through it.
