There was a time when space travel seemed as though it would always be reserved for scientists and astronauts, but as companies like SpaceX and Virgin Galactic continue to make headway on private space travel, there may just be a new frontier to add to the travel bucket list—and it’s about to get a whole lot more comfortable thanks to Houston-based company Axiom Space.

Co-founded by NASA’s former International Space Station (ISS) manager, Michael Suffredini, the cutting edge space company has officially announced its plans to launch the first-ever commercial space station by 2024. The US$2 billion project, known as “AxStation” will double as a high end hotel for space enthusiasts and travellers who wish to take their adventure to new heights.

“Axiom was founded with the vision of a thriving home in space that benefits every human everywhere,” Suffredini told The Times in a statement. “We often hear that that is a very bold statement. It is.”

The Axiom Station habitation module, as it’s being referred to by the private aerospace company, was designed and created by prolific French product designer Philippe Starck with both high end aesthetics, comfort, and practicality in mind—all of which will be necessary in order to accommodate a roster of professional astronauts as well as space tourists.

While the vision for a luxury hotel in outer-space may seem out-of-this-world, Axiom plans to complete the first phase of the project in as little as three years—by 2024. If you’re interested in finding out more about the ambitious project or getting information on how to book a stay as a space tourist, be sure to follow the AxStation project on the official Axiom Space website.
