One of the UK’s most prestigious independent boarding schools, Malvern College, is coming to Hong Kong. From September next year, Malvern College Hong Kong (MCHK) will offer international families the same exceptional standard of education—with emphasis on academic achievement combined with all-round personal development—that has nurtured world leaders, Nobel laureates and Olympic champions at its British parent, founded in 1865.

The 26,000 square-metre, seven-storey campus near Hong Kong Science Park will offer the coveted British boarding school experience in a day school environment, with students studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme throughout. The low student-teacher ratio of 10:1 and dedicated tutor time will enable personalised learning tailored to individual students’ needs.

Malvern College adopted the IB Diploma Programme in the 1990s, one of the first schools in the UK to do so. From Year 9, MCHK students who meet Malvern College UK entry requirements will also have the opportunity to transfer and continue their studies there.

Malvern College has always enjoyed an excellent reputation for the quality of its science teaching, and the Hong Kong school will uphold that tradition. With 10 laboratories and a science centre, it will foster a spirit of inquiry, critical thinking and problem solving through practical scientific experimentation and a curriculum that stresses the application of science in everyday life.

It will also pursue collaborations with neighbouring Hong Kong Science Park and Chinese University of Hong Kong. It plans to host a range of science-related activities and programmes including clubs, competitions, camps, excursions, science fairs, lecture series, and a science community outreach programme.

MCHK will provide students with a well-rounded, personalised education that develops character as well as knowledge. A wide range of activities outside the classroom will help students develop their personal qualities, while the house system will encourage teamwork and foster close friendships. In addition to personal tutors, pastoral care includes a mentorship programme, character education classes, and careers guidance and counselling.

There’s no better demonstration of this rounded education than the Forest School programme, based on the belief that the great outdoors is as good a teacher as any book. Malvern’s strong sporting tradition is central to MCHK. A sky pitch, an indoor multipurpose sports hall (complete with cricket lanes with special flooring that closely mimics the bounce of a real cricket pitch) and a 6-lane indoor swimming pool will all be at the students’ disposal.

Outdoor games and activities help develop teamwork, resourcefulness and self-esteem; students are encouraged to take the lead in solving problems, making decisions and exploring—just as they do in every aspect of their Malvern College education.
