While more and more high end automakers have switched gears to produce more hybrid and electric vehicles, Maserati has taken the steps to further blur the lines when it comes to indulging in top luxury while simultaneously being environmentally conscious.

The storied Italian automaker has this week unveiled its first foray into electric vehicles—a Ghibli Hybrid that was first unveiled to the public as a concept car nearly seven years ago.

“Ghibli Hybrid, as the name suggests, is something new, electrifying and fearless,” the Italian marque said in a statement on its website. “Known for its roar, our engineers and designers chose to maintain its predecessor’s performance, voice, and design. From turbocharged 4-cylinder engine unleashing 330 horsepower, to anodised blue trims, this sports saloon is unmistakably a Maserati.”

Maserati purists will be happy to know that it “would take an X-ray to reveal the differences behind the surface” compared to a regular gas powered vehicle. The mechanical changes, while massive in terms of innovation, are almost indistinct when it comes to the feel of the car.

The interior will include a new multimedia user interface that will be controlled by a larger, tablet-style screen while offering real-time software updates that will allow for maps that accurately chart the world, emergency roadside assistance, and on-board diagnostics, among other tech advancements.

Production of the Ghibli Hybrid is scheduled to begin in September with the first cars being rolled out and delivered at the end of October.

Maserati has also announced its plans to produce two new electric vehicles within the next year—the GranTurismo and GranCabrio. The MC20 sports car, which will make its debut later this year, is also rumoured to come in a hybrid or electric option.
