The Ghibli hybrid is predicted to boost overall Maserati sales across China.

All eyes will be on Maserati this April as it unveils its first ever hybrid vehicle at the Beijing Auto Show. Adding a hybrid Ghibli to its existing lineup will mark the Italian automaker’s first push for sustainability.

According to Automotive News, the sporty Ghibli sedan is expected to feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, however Maserati has not confirmed details of the car’s hybrid system as of yet.

The Ghibli hybrid is set to boost Maserati sales in China thanks to the government promoting electrification, but is also expected to help the brand in Europe as tougher CO2 rules are pushing automotive brands to offer increasing numbers of low-emission plug-in hybrids.

Chinese buyers of a Ghibli hybrid would be eligible for 10,000-yuan subsidies from the Chinese government if the vehicle does in fact include a plug-in drivetrain (the incentives are not offered for other types of hybrids).

Maserati will launch no less than 10 new vehicles between 2020 and 2023 according to their latest business plan. The new models will include the Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio, which will be the brand’s first cars to adopt a 100% electric solution and will be built at the Turin production hub.

What’s more, the all-new sports car is rumoured to be unveiled at Maserati's headquarters in Modena, Italy this May. The vehicle is said to be fully electric with combustion powertrains and will rival the Ferrari F8 Tributo and Lamborghini Huracan supercars.

While the brand will never go fully electric, according to Maserati, all of the new models will adopt hybrid and battery electric propulsion systems capable of providing both innovation, high performance, and luxury that the brand is known for.
