Mark your calendars, art lovers and toy collectors—Michael Lau is unveiling a series of new works at Christie's in Shanghai this month. Dubbed "the Godfather of designer toys", Hong Kong-based Lau was the first artist to produce collectible vinyl figurines, sparking a trend that has influenced the work of major international artists such as Kaws and Takashi Murakami. Lau first became interested in vinyl toys when he was a child in 1970s Hong Kong, when the city was manufacturing and exporting toys to all corners of the world.
This selling exhibition at Christie's in Shanghai features more than 50 new works, including vinyl figurines, fibreglass sculptures and oil-on-canvas paintings, many of them featuring Lau's best-known characters. Check out the gallery above for a first look at some of the works on display.
Michel Lau: Collect Them All! runs from August 31 to September at Christie's, 2/F, Ampire Building, 97 Yuanmingyuan Road, Shanghai . christies.com
