The courses and specialisations span from photography and fashion to modern art.

While a trip to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York’s Midtown is largely out of the question for the time being, learning to appreciate modern art has never been easier.

The Museum of Modern Art has listed a handful of free online courses that you can enroll in and complete at your own pace—and come out of the quarantine with a better appreciation of modern art.

The selection of nine courses, where you’ll be able to hear from curators, artists, designers, and photographers in a mimicked university setting, are available now at Coursera, an online learning platform with education institutions ranging from Yale and Harvard to the University of Tokyo.

The course offerings range from an approximate 12 to 38 hours in total commitment time but unlike a university course, they’re designed to be completed as leisurely as needed and are simply curated to instill a deeper understanding of art for the general public.

Courses and specialisations include Fashion as Design, Postwar Abstract Painting, What is Contemporary Art?, Seeing Through Photographs, Modern Art & Ideas, as well as Teaching with Themes, Museum Teaching Strategies, and Strategies for Engaging with Art, which were designed for teachers and educators (or parents at home with children).

If a full-fledged university course is too much of a commitment, the MoMA, like many museums and galleries around the world, has also created a handful of great virtual content for art lovers to peruse—including remote learning assets, a virtual tour with over 86,000 pieces from the collection, as well as a podcast tour of the museum, hosted by comedian and Broad City co-creator, Abbi Jacobson.
