Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s time to get into the spooky spirit. While there may not be as many Halloween parties happening around town this year, you can still get into the festive spirit by getting decked out with Halloween-inspired nail art, trying out a Halloween menu, or by binge-watching the best horror films Netflix has on offer. 

Gather a few friends, load up on candy and book a Halloween staycation to watch these horror films all in one night. 1/10 Fantasy Island (2020)

 

An island that brings fantasies to life, Fantasy Island sounds almost too good to true-–and it is. The film follows five lucky contest winners as they arrive at a resort that will fulfil one of their fantasies each. As the lucky five dive deeper into their fantasies, they realise things aren’t as simple as they were led to believe.

2/10 Hubie Halloween (2020)

 

Scared of traditional horror movies? Hubie Halloween is a comedy horror film that follows Hubie, a deli worker played by Adam Sandler, who loves Halloween as he tries to keep his town safe from his new eccentric neighbour and an escaped criminal.

If you’re looking for a feel-good, quirky film with a touch of horror and plenty of laughs, Hubie Halloween may be what you’re looking for.

3/10 It (2017)

 

The haunting image of Pennywise the Dancing Clown will stay in your head even days after you’re done watching this film. Based on Stephen King’s book, It tells the story of seven children who are terrorised by Pennywise and pushed to confront and face their personal struggles while doing so.

4/10 Death Note (2017)

 

Netflix’s adaptation of the hit Japanese manga, Death Note is a supernatural thriller where high school student Light Turner finds a notebook that can kill anyone whose name is written inside. The notebook’s owner, death god Ryuk convinces Turner to test out the notebook, which begins Turner’s killing spree.

5/10 The Shining (1980)

 

Would it be a horror film roundup without The Shining? This film may be almost half a century old but it remains as one of the best horror movies of all time. 

Based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, The Shining’s main character is Jack Torrance, an aspiring writer who works as an off-season caretaker of Overlook Hotel. Torrance’s wife and son join him over the winter, only to be met with an unhinged version of Torrance due to his new psychic abilities to see into the hotel’s blood-filled past.

6/10 The Devil All The Time (2020)

 

Starring Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgard and Sebastian Stan, The Devil All The Time is a dark psychological thriller adapted from Donald Ray Pollack’s 2011 novel. Set after the second world war, the film unfolds across generations, families and wars.

The gothic tale is filled with thought-provoking scenes, religion and gruesome, hard-to-watch moments. We promise you won’t see Spider-Man the same way again after this.

7/10 In The Tall Grass (2019)

 

Based on Stephen King and Joe Hill’s 2012 novella, In The Tall Grass is a supernatural horror drama directed by Vincenzo Natali. The nightmare begins when siblings Becky and Cal hear a young boy calling for help from a field of tall grass. The siblings get separated and try to make their way back, only to find out there may be no way out.

8/10 The Babysitter (2017)

 

This movie starts off like most generic comedies: Pre-teen boy develops a crush on his popular babysitter, they bond, with a bit of alcohol involved. However, The Babysitter takes a darker turn when the boy, Cole, learns that his crush, Bee, was a devil-worshipping murderer who targets innocent, young boys like himself. Intensity grows as the audience follows Cole as he fends off Bee and her cult throughout the entire night. 

After you’re done with The Babysitter, binge on the movie sequel, The Babysitter: Killer Queen which is set during Cole’s junior year in high school two years later.

9/10 Bird Box (2018)

 

Keep your eyes closed if you want to make it out alive. Bird Box is a horror-thriller that follows a woman as she navigates through the post-apocalyptic world with her two children where supernatural entities make people commit suicide after seeing them. 

Attracting media attention worldwide when the film was first released, this movie will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

Think you’ll survive a zombie apocalypse in 2020? #Alive is a South Korean zombie film that revolves around a Joon-woo, video game streamer’s struggle in his apartment as everyone in his neighbourhood becomes infected with the disease, turning them into zombies.

Unprepared for a total lockdown inside his apartment, Joon-woo struggles to stay alive due to the lack of water, food, internet service and phone service. Lesson learnt from this movie? Stock up on food supplies just in case there might be a zombie apocalypse coming.
