Most of us know all too well the struggle of unlocking your iPhone with Face ID while wearing a mask—which is why Apple has decided to update its mobile software to make using Face ID much easier. In fact, Apple yesterday released the iOS 13.5 and iPadOS 13.5 GM to developers, with relevant updates to make using Face ID much less frustrating.

According to a 9to5Mac report, the update will likely be available to the general public as soon as next week after an evolving beta testing period which will include both the updates to Face ID and the first version of Apple’s COVID-19 Exposure Notification API.

“iOS 13.5 speeds up access to the passcode field on devices with Face ID when you are wearing a face mask and introduces the Exposure Notification API to support COVID-19 contact tracing apps from public health authorities,” the company explained in a series of release notes. “This update also introduces an option to control automatic prominence of video tiles on Group FaceTime calls and includes bug fixes and other improvements.”

So how will the new iOS updates work? While you still won’t technically be able to unlock your phone with your mask on, the new Face ID will learn to recognise that you’re wearing a mask and rather than recognising just your eyes, it will immediately switch to the password screen to have you unlock your phone with your passcode without having to toggle away from Face ID manually.

Apple will also improve its new COVID-10 notification system by detecting two people close to each other when one or both have been diagnosed with the virus, the phones will then anonymously alert each other and add contact tracing lists to the cloud.

In the release notes, Apple also said it will make fixes for FaceTime, streaming video, and the Mail app on iPad but the updates to Face ID and exposure notifications will surely come as the most significant changes.
