The limited edition Companion figure will be available as of midnight on December 18

Brooklyn-based artist Kaws has today announced that he will be releasing a limited edition facedown figure to commemorate twenty years since his iconic Companion character debuted back in December of 2000.

“2020, what a year… On the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of Companion I am happy to release Companion 2020 tomorrow at noon EST,” the artist said in a statement on Instagram. “In true 2020 form, part of the shipment is stuck out at sea. So we will release what we have along with some Holiday Space and BFF that just arrived, and work on releasing the rest of the pieces somewhere at a later date.”

The unique figure will be available in classic brown/tan/green, grey, and black/yellow colourways—and unlike the usual Companion figures, this one will be laying flat on its stomach, with a flattened face, chest, and legs—almost coming as a nod to the exhaustion and wear and tear that the past year has taken on the collective—while commemorating the past twenty years that has turned Companion from a contemporary art figure to a pop culture icon in its own right.

“Thank you for all your support over the past twenty years as I continue to figure out how to share my work directly with you!” the artist added.
