Ralph Lauren shares his vintage car collection with the world in Paris at L’Art de L’Automobile
L’Art de L’Automobile: Masterpieces of the Ralph Lauren Collection is a must-see if you’re in France this month (and why wouldn’t you be, it is the month of the Cannes Film Festival). In a rare exhibition, vintage car fanatic designer Ralph Lauren - better known for his fashion label - displays 17 of his automobiles from his car collection at Paris’ Musée Des Arts Décoratifs.
Lauren’s intention for this exhibition is for visitors to view automobiles not only as mechanical breakthroughs throughout our time, but also as a form of art. To reiterate Lauren’s sentiment, he has invited curator Rodolphe Rapetti and Jean-Michel Wilmottee to choose from his collection pieces which best reflect his intention.
The biggest names in the car industry are on display; ranging from Bugatti, Alfa Romea, Bentley, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Bentley and more. Among them, the must-see vehicles featured includes the 1955 Jaguar XKD also known as the winner of three Le Mans 24 Hours races between 1955-1957; the Bentley 1920 Blower, the original James Bond 007 in Ian Fleming's first novels; the Bugatti 57 SC Atlantic Coupé 1938, as only two of the four models made now still exist; and lastly, the Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa 1958 built by one of Ferrari’s most notable designers, Sergio Scaglietti.
