What’s luxury without a little gold (or a lot)? Ahead of the opening of The 13, luxury entrepreneur Stephen Hung’s highly anticipated US$1 billion hotel in Macau, Rolls-Royce has just announced two of their most expensive Phantoms ever built.

The two gold-infused motor cars are reserved for the hotel's most important guests, and are part of the 30 bespoke Phantoms ordered by Hung that comprise the largest single commission in Rolls-Royce history.

Everything from the exterior to the seats of the cars has been carefully designed for the ultimate in luxury experience. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The finish, which is enhanced with particles of gold, uses 2.5x more paint than other Phantoms for its 10 layers, one of which is a 40-micron deep layer of gold
  • The Spirit of Ecstasy figurine on top of the gold Pantheon Grille is also plated in 24-karat gold

It took a lucky eight attempts to mix the perfect shade of red.

  • A pavé of 336 brilliant-cut diamonds surrounds the signature RR emblem, the badge below the figurine
  • The starlight headliner, a unique feature of Rolls-Royce Phantoms that turns the car's roof into any constellation with fibre optic lights, depicts the map of stars over Macau

A block of 18K gold weighing almost 100 grams is the foundation of the Rolls-Royce badge, which is finished with 24K gold.

  • Special compartments in the doors hold umbrellas with gold-plated handles to protect guests from the weather and paparazzi

Twenty-four karat gold is a feature of both the interior and exterior of the Phantoms.

  • The seats' handwoven black-and-white leather panels echo the checkered floor of the hotel’s entrance
  • The instrument dials and clock (designed in collaboration with Graff) reference The 13’s red and gold theme

The 13 is set to open in the first half of 2017 with 200 all-villa units, each of which cost US$7 million to construct.
