The popular Facebook group, Subtle Asian Traits has inspired a college television series

Popular Asian community Facebook group, Subtle Asian Traits has inspired a college-set television series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Jumpcut, a new data-driven television studio launched earlier this month, secured the rights to produce the show from the Facebook group’s founders—nine Chinese-Australian students who started the group back in high school in September 2018.

Subtle Asian Traits, which started out as a meme-sharing page amongst friends quickly became a safe space for Asians around the world to share their own Asian experiences through memes and light-hearted jokes. The group has since inspired other interest-focused subgroups such as Subtle Asian Dating, Subtle Asian Fitness, Subtle Asian Travel, and more. However, the original group remains the most popular one by far, with 1.9 million members currently a part of the community.

The television series will be penned by Canadian director, Ivan Tsang and Justin R. Ching, who previously produced shows for Fox, Amazon, and a Food Network Asian-American docuseries.

In recent years, the production of Asian-centred television shows and films such as Bling Empire, Kim’s Convenience, Always Be My Maybe and Crazy Rich Asians have been widely celebrated by the Asian community as a sign for greater Asian representation in the entertainment industry.

While it’ll probably be a while until we can watch the Subtle Asian Traits-inspired television show, in the meantime, check out the show’s source of inspiration on Facebook, or head over to Netflix to give other Asian-led shows and movies some love.
