In Japan, seeing the first sunrise of the new year is somewhat a special tradition. Hatsuhinode or the first sunrise of the year is believed to bring early risers who catch the sunrise, good luck. Though travel is still on pause because of Covid-19, that doesn't mean we can't go sunrise hopping right in our own backyard.

We have beautiful beaches, Instagram spots, and stunning temples for us to admire. But there's always something more to discover in Hong Kong. Move over sunset––for a city that never sleeps, the perfect way to start your day is to visit one of these sunrise spots.

1/7 Garden Hill

Garden Hill is one of the most sought-after sunset spots in the city so you can expect it always it to be filled with avid photographers and sunset lovers. To avoid the crowds, head to this spot to catch the sunrise instead. The summit also offers a great escape to the hustle and bustle of the Sham Shui Po neighbourhood below.

2/7 Shek O Beach

A popular choice for beach lovers, Shek O beach also blesses you with some of the most majestic sunrise views. From its golden soft sand and hillside scenery, it's no surprise that many flock here. Enjoy the sight of the sun as it appears over the South China sea. At its best, the sky can appear in hues of orange and purple—which is sure to make anyone stare in awe.

3/7 Tap Mun

Tap Mun is a lot of things: a great place for a picnic, for overnight camping, and for watching the sunrise. The scenic coastline provides unbeatable and unobstructed views of the sunrise. You can also take in the stunning rock formations and feast your eyes on the lush greenery.

4/7 Tai Mo Shan

As the highest peak in the city, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Tai Mo Shan is on the list. Frequented by hikers and sunset lovers alike, the hike up is well worth it as you'll be rewarded with some of the most majestic views of the city. A pre-dawn hike is recommended as you can see how the night sky slowly changes to the morning light which is romantic just as it's picturesque.

5/7 Sharp Peak

True to its name, Sharp Peak features one of the steepest inclines for hiking in Hong Kong. Challenge yourselves and you'll be satisfied with the 360-degree open view––perfectly capturing one of the best sites to see the sunrise in the city. Completing your view is Ko Lau Wan, Port Island, Nam She Wan and a coast known as "Thousand Stream." You also get unparalleled views of the coastlines of Ham Tin Wan, Tai Wan and Tung Wan.

6/7 Lantau Peak

Get your cameras ready. Over at Hong Kong's second-highest hill, you can enjoy panoramic views of Tung Chung, stretching as far Tuen Mun, Cheung Sha and Shek Pik Reservoir. A little bit more under the radar than its neighbour, Sunset Peak, going here during the wee hours will not only give you peace and quiet, but a sunrise view well worth the hike.

7/7 Lugard Road

Victoria Peak is known to be one of the most popular places to see commanding views of the Hong Kong skyline. But a small path called Lugard Road located near the Victoria Peak viewpoint might be a better choice for a sunrise-spotting trip. This spot is located near the top of Victoria Peak and given the popularity of the area, this alternative spot, which is also a well-known running trail, might give you the downtime that you need for your sunrise photo.
