The unprecedented digital art museum had more than two million visitors in 2019—just a year after it opened
When teamLab Borderless opened in Japan in the summer of 2018, it was already an instant hit with locals, tourists, celebrities and musicians. The unprecedented digital art museum has welcomed millions of visitors across 160 countries and regions—which is evident in the long waiting lines you see outside the museum. With its Instagrammable art installations that are also interactive, it ushered in a new era of art viewing, one that combines art and technology.
But teamLab Borderless has achieved no easy feat, within a year of its opening it already received a record-breaking 2,198,284 visitors according to the Guinness World Records. This makes it the most visited museum dedicated to a single group or artist in the world. With this record, teamLab Borderless surpassed the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam as well as Picasso Museum in Barcelona.
Since teamLab Borderless' inception, teamLab the brains behind the museum is an international art collective of artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects whose collaborative practice aims to navigate the confluence of art, science, technology and the natural world by exploring the relationship between the self, the world and new perceptions through art.
The popularity of teamLab spun many other outposts and exhibitions across the world including the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Art Science Museum in Singapore and its own teamLab Borderless in Shanghai. teamLab Borderless just underwent a major revamp and unveiled its new additions starting today. The Athletics Forest and Light Sculpture Space is renewed in addition to a newly-added Sketch Factory, which allows visitors to turn their own drawings into memorabilia that can be brought home.
Five new works are added to the Light Sculpture Space where visitors can immerse their bodies in the collections of moving light lines. A new artwork is added to the Borderless World while itself has also been enlarged. Meanwhile, Reversible Rotation, Flying Beyond Borders: One Stroke, Cold Light will show calligraphy in the monitor and fly across the Borderless World.
In its offshoot teamLab Planets, two new immersive living garden artworks were just added earlier this month. Visitors can walk through an interactive garden filled with 13,000 live orchids blooming in mid-air, in addition to an ever-changing moss garden with glowing ovoids resonating with the surrounding light and sound.
