From a novel, to a TV show and now a musical—"The Queen's Gambit" fans will be able to see the story of chess prodigy, Beth Harmon on the stage soon

It seems it's not yet the end game for Netflix's highly popular series, The Queen's Gambit as it is set to get a musical adaptation. Upon its release on Netflix in October 2020, the seven-episode series broke records and became the most-watched limited series in its first 28 days of streaming with 62 million households tuning in. The musical adaptation is currently under development and set to premiere on New York's Broadway.

Level Forward acquired the theatrical stage rights to Walter Tevis' 1983 novel of which the series is based on. The company has a number of stage credits including Oklahoma!, What the Consitution Means to Me and Slave Play. One of its founders, Abigail Disney is the grandniece of Walt Disney. While details have been kept under wraps with no announcement of any creative talent working on the planned musical, Level Forward CEO, Adrienne Becker and producer Julia Dunetz said to Playbill that "it is a privilege for Level Forward to lead the charge of bringing The Queen’s Gambit to the stage through the beloved and enduring craft of musical theatre."

"Audiences are already sharing in the friendship and fortitude of the story’s inspiring women who energise and sustain Beth Harmon’s journey and ultimate triumph. The story is a siren call amidst our contemporary struggles for gender and racial equity, and we’re looking forward to moving the project forward," they added.

The Queen's Gambit follows orphan-turned-chess-prodigy Beth Harmon as she navigates her way and eventually finds her rightful place in a sport dominated by men, battling prejudices and her own addiction along the way. The series recently nabbed the Golden Globes for Best Television Limited Series and Anya Taylor-Joy bagged the Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited TV Series for her incredible performance—one of the youngest to win the category.
