The virtual tour of Australia’s coastline will be hosted by British historian Sir David Attenborough

While you may not very well be able to hop on a plane to Australia right now, you still have a chance to visit the elusive Great Barrier Reef from home.

British historian and narrator of Planet Earth and the Netflix series, “Our Planet,” Sir David Attenborough, aims to take guests on an interactive virtual experience that features one of the most striking naturally occuring wonders of the world with his interactive new project.

“This is one of the most spectacular, complex, but fragile ecosystems in the world,” Attenborough said in the introductory video for the project. “Sixty years ago, I dived on the reef for the first time. And, ever since, it has held a deep fascination for me.”

The project, titled “David Attenborough's Barrier Reef,” takes guests on a virtual adventure, guiding them through everything from how coral grows to the environmental impacts and hazards such as coral bleaching.

“With over 1,500 species of fish, 600 coral species and 30 different whale and dolphin species, it is one of the most biodiverse and complex ecosystems on the planet.” Attenborough said in a statement.

The program includes a number of chapters to guide you through 2,300 kilometers of Australia’s coastline, which includes a map that lets you know just how far you’ve travelled along the coast.

Aside from providing cultural entertainment to the hundreds of thousands of people currently self-isolating, Attenborough also hopes to raise awareness for the “beautiful but threatened” Great Barrier Reef. The program will also include actionable steps that need to be taken in order to ensure the ecosystem’s long term survival.
