The second highest honour went to Hong Sang-soo’s The Novelist’s Film while Spanish-Italian drama, Alcarràs took home the top prize
In his ninth appearance at the Berlin International Film Festival, South Korean director Hong Sang-soo brought home his fourth award: a Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize for The Novelist’s Film.
For his 27th feature, the director also took on writing, producing, lensing, editing and scoring duties. Hong accepted the prize in person together with Kim Min-hee, who also stars in the film. The 72nd edition also marks the festival darling’s third consecutive appearance in Competition. Last year, he took home the Best Director prize for The Woman Who Ran.
The M. Night Shyamalan-led jury gave the top honour to Carla Simón’s second feature, Alcarràs. Her award marks the first time that the three winners of the three most prestigious film festivals—Cannes, Venice and Berlin—are all women. French director Audrey Diwan’s drama, Happening clinched the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival while fellow French director, Julia Ducournau received the Palme d’Or for Titane at Cannes Film Festival.
The festival also capped a strong night for female filmmakers with Natalia Lopez Gallardo getting the Silver Bear Jury Prize for Robe of Gems and the Silver Bear Best Director award for Claire Denis for Fire. Meanwhile, Laura Basuki took home the Best Supporting Performance for her role in Kamila Andini’s Before, Now & Then.
