Be sure to make room on your calendar for these exciting things happening this month

With summer finally here, the city is positively buzzing with events. Whether you want to soak up the sun at Discovery Bay’s music carnival or hide from it at art collective TeamLab’s debut exhibition in Hong Kong, there’s something for everybody.

Speaking of debuts, some of the Mirror boys will be holding their first solo concerts this month—read on to find out about the concert details, as well as other exciting happenings in the city this July.

1. teamLab’s ‘Future Park’

When: July 9, 2023 - January 14, 2024

Where: 13/F, MegaBox, Kowloon Bay

What: After opening its highly anticipated Super Nature exhibition at the Venetian Macao, art collective teamLab is bringing an immersive multisensory showcase to Hong Kong. Spanning 10,000 square feet, the exhibition space will blend art and technology through six kaleidoscopic installations: Graffiti Nature–Beating Mountains and Valleys, Red List; Light Ball Orchestra; Sliding through the Fruit Field; A Table where Little People Live; Sketch Town and Sketch Town Papercraft; and Hopscotch for Geniuses.

2. Hong Kong Book Fair

When: July 19-25

Where: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai

What: Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the 33rd edition of the book fair will not only host book stalls selling a varied range of international and Asian titles, it will also organise seminars and panel discussions that foster a reading culture. In tandem with the book fair, two other fairs—the Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo, and World of Snacks—will be held at the same venue.

3. Mirror members’ ‘In My Sight’ solo concert series

When: July 7-9, July 23-25, August 3-5, August 26-27

Where: Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai

What: Keung To, Anson Lo, Edan Lui, Jer Lau and two other Mirror members will debut individual solo shows this month. Collectively known as In My Sight, the concert series will kick off with Jer Lau’s shows at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from July 7 to 9. After that, the concerts will move to Asia Expo Arena for Anson Lo (July 23 to 25), Keung To (August 3 to 5), and Edan Lui (August 26 to 27).

4. International Arts Carnival

When: July 14 - August 12

Where: Hong Kong City Hall, Yuen Long Theatre and other venues

What: One of the city’s biggest cultural events returns with both online and in-person shows. Attracting world-class performers from across the globe, this year’s edition will cover dance, music, theatre and acrobatics, all infused with interactive, art tech and multimedia elements.

5. ‘Vital Signs’ exhibition

When: June 30 - September 3

Where: Tai Kwun, Central

What: Tai Kwun celebrates the skills, creativity and talents of the city’s neon lights craftsmen through its Vital Signs exhibition that sees the Laundry Steps transformed into a vibrant streetscape of Hong Kong, lit by neon lights.

6. TheNextWave

When: July 29-30

Where: Discovery Bay

What: Discovery Bay’s seaside will welcome more than 20 singers and DJ performances for this beach carnival and music festival. Performers include The Hertz, Jeffrey Ngai, JB, Jay Fung and more. The two-day event will also offer 70 VIP sections for those who desire a more exclusive partying experience.

7. ‘Madame Song: Pioneering Art and Fashion In China’ exhibition

When: From July 29

Where: West Gallery, M+ Museum

What: M+ will host the world’s first-ever museum exhibition dedicated to the legendary Song Huai-Kuei, a trailblazer in the field of art, fashion and pop culture in China from the 1980s to 2000s. More than 320 objects including rare archival material, designer garments, movie costumes and footage, artworks and large-scale tapestry installations, will be on display.

8. Also Festival

When: June 30 - July 1

Where: Star Hall, Kitec, Kowloon Bay

What: After a first successful edition last year, the Also Festival is coming back stronger than ever with a line-up celebrating Hong Kong’s hip-hop culture. The two-day event will feature 30 regional hip-hop artists and DJs such as Matt Force, Txmiyama, Novel Fergus and Geniuz F The Future.
