Lee Dong-wook as Lee Yeon

No stranger to the South Korean entertainment circuit, this actor, host, and model is best known for his diverse acting chops in a slew of notable K-dramas including My Girl (2005), Scent of a Woman (2011), Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–2017), Life (2018), and Touch Your Heart (2019).

Kim Bum as Lee Rang

Early K-drama audiences would agree that it was Boys Over Flowers (2009) that put Kim Bum on the map and made him a fan favourite. He would later earn more recognition for his first fantasy series in Padam Padam (2011), That Winter, The Wind Blows (2013), and more recently, Ghost Doctor (2022), in which he starred alongside first-generation K-pop idol Rain.

Kim So-yeon as Ryu Hong-joo

The multiple award-winning actress also previously starred in a number of well-known dramas such as All About Eve (2000), Iris (2009), Prosecutor Princess (2010), and Happy Home (2016).

Ryu Kyung-soo as Cheon Mu-young

While Ryu doesn't have a lot of K-dramas in his acting catalogue, he has been busy in recent years, actively taking on roles ranging from thrillers to romcoms. He was seen in Confession (2019), Itaewon Class (2020), Lovestruck in the City (2020-2021), Hellbound (2021), and Glitch (2022).

Unlike its previous season, Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 delivers dynamic action scenes and diverse characters woven into a tale about Korean mythical beings.

It takes the suave gumiho (which means nine-tailed fox in Korean) Lee Yeon (Lee) away from his happy ending and brings him back in time to 1938 during the chaotic Japanese occupation of Korea unexpectedly due to certain events that happened after Tale of the Nine Tailed. There, he comes face to face once again with his half-blood gumiho brother Lee Rang (Kim Bum) but they get trapped in the past as the time gate to the present day closes.

This creates a whole host of complications including having to contend with oppressive Japanese colonisers, a myriad of demons and deities, and even a stalkery mountain god named Ryu Hong-joo (Kim) who is obsessed with Lee Yeon.

In explaining season two's premise, Kang revealed: “I debated which we should show between Lee Yeon’s past, present, and future. If we dealt with Lee Yeon’s love and brother previously, this time we wanted to show the expansion of Lee Yeon as a mountain god. That’s why we decided to send him to the time period when he most neglected his duties as a mountain god and the time period with the people who needed his help the most.”

"In Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938, the brothers still have a hot, fierce, and fiery relationship. He wants to kill him more than anyone else, but he can’t stand others killing him. If he’s going to be killed, he has to kill him with his own hands and is not okay with others bothering him. If the first story of Tale of the Nine Tailed was about brothers bickering, their conflict, and reconciliation, this second story will feature Lee Rang not being able to stand situations that are provoking his brother," Kim Bum said.
