The 2021 edition of the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled its full movie lineup, leaning towards Asian-heavy titles

The Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled its movie lineup which comprising of a star-studded mix of entertainment blockbusters and arthouse favourites. They also announced that French actress, Isabelle Huppert will be serving as the president of the Competition jury who will select the prize winners.

Japanese actress, Hashimoto Ai serves as the festival’s ambassador. This year, the lineup leans toward an Asia focus in addition to the number of local Japanese films. The festival will take place from October 30 to November 8 at its new venues in Hibiya, Yurakucho and Ginza areas in Tokyo. It will open with Cry Macho by Clint Eastwood and close with Stephen Chbosky’s Dear Evan Hansen.

1. Competition

The Competition section is the festival’s main highlight and showcases films completed after January 2021. This year, 15 feature films around the world were selected for screening. The five-member jury led by actress Isabelle Huppert will award the Tokyo Grand Prix, Special Jury Prize, Best Director, Best Actress and Actor and Best Artist Contribution at the closing ceremony.

2. Asian Films

The motto of the ninth edition of the Asian Future is “From Asia to the world! From Asia to the future.” This section features up-and-coming Asian directors who have directed no more than three feature-length films. One movie will be awarded the Asian Future Best Film Award while all 10 selected films are having their long-awaited world premiere.

3. Gala Section

The films for the Gala Section are premiering ahead of their Japanese release. This year, 10 films were selected which includes the most talked-about movies in international film festivals, the latest work of internationally renowned auteurs and entertainment films that were massive hits in their home regions.

4. World Focus

The World Focus section presents notable works from various international film festivals as well as films that haven't been released in Japan. The section also showcases Spanish, Central American and South American films in collaboration with the Latin Beat Film Festival.

5. Nippon Cinema Now

The Nippon Cinema Now section selects Japanese films released this past year and films that international audiences should watch. This year's lineup puts director Yoshida Keisuke’s work into focus.

6. Japanese Animation

The keyword that ties up this year’s Japanese Animation section is “onko-chishin” which means to respect the past and create something new. The section will look back at the works of great animator, Otsuka Yasuo. Meanwhile, the Tokusatsu Section (roughly translated to special filming, refers to a movie that heavily uses special effects) will feature the popular Kamen Rider series which celebrates its 50th year anniversary.

7. Japanese Classics

The Japanese Classics section will show a 4K restoration of The Family Game to commemorate the decade after Morita Yoshimitsu’s passing. Other works include the 4K restoration of three films by Tanak Kinuyo.
