These five-star hotels are opening in Asia Pacific in 2023, and we can't wait to check in

While travel may have been put on hold these last few years, hotels have been busy building some truly spectacular properties around the world. Though we have to say, we're particularly excited about the properties set to open in Asia in the coming months.

From a hotel serving West Hollywood vibes in the heart of Singapore to an off-the-grid luxury escape that puts guests at the heart of the Himalayan Mountains, a seductive surf shack in outer New South Wales and more—these luxury hotel openings in Asia will prompt you to start making travel plans for 2023 and beyond.

Adding to its portfolio of properties in the Asia Pacific region—we adore Capella Singapore and Capella Bangkok—Capella brings its  five-star offerings further south to open its first Australian property.

The highly anticipated Capella Sydney is housed a spectacular heritage-listed sandstone building in the heart of Sydney's central business district, just a short walk from the Sydney Opera House.

4. Cap Karoso, Sumba, Indonesia

Tatler Asia
Above Cap Karoso in Sumba, Indonesia, combines five-star accommodation that benefits the local community

Just a cheeky 30-minute flight from Bali, Sumba is Indonesia's (sort of) secret paradise. The largely undeveloped island boasts rugged coastlines, white sand beaches, wild horses, and some of the world's most spectacular resorts—like Cap Karoso, which opened in early 2023.

Cap Karoso has 47 rooms and 20 villas, and an organic farm that also acts as a farming school for the Sumbese community.

Its founders, Fabrice and Evguenia Ivara, are determined to make a difference to the local community and environment. Consulting Sumba's indigenous community, they've committed to hiring 80% of the staff locally, using 50% solar power for energy, and reducing air-conditioning needs with intelligent design and greenery.

Heading the design was GFAB Architects, who incorporated plenty of local influences like Indonesian art, handmade teaware, hand-carved wood furniture and more.

5. Four Seasons Suzhou, China

Suzhou, one of China’s famous canal cities just a half-hour train from Shanghai, will welcome its very own Four Seasons later this year.

Located on a 22-acre private island in the heart of Jinji Lake, surrounded by Suzhou's glittering city skyline, the Four Seasons Hotel Suzhou will show off Suzhou's flourishing metropolitan side while paying homage to its history.

The eastern Chinese city is known for its UNESCO-listed classical gardens, and picturesque ancient stone bridges arching over serene waterways.

The hotel will include 200 rooms, suites and villas, indoor and outdoor pools, a kids’ club and a jogging track that runs along the island's shoreline. There are plans to open a high-end Chinese restaurant and—because no Four Seasons property is complete without one—a lobby bar with panoramic lake views.

6. Innit Lombok, Indonesia

Tatler Asia
Above Innit Lombok on on the private island of Ekas Bay boasts an earthy, minimalist design

Bali will always have a place in our hearts, but we love Lombok for a dose of sun, sea and serenity. Now, with the opening of Innit Lombok, there's even more reason to visit.

Located on the private island of Ekas Bay, Innit Lombok sits on a 250-metre stretch of private beach. The property boasts seven beach houses, 26 ocean view villas and 27 hilltop residences. The earthy, minimalist design by architects Andra Martin and Gregorius Supie Yolodi allows the hotel's lush surroundings to do the talking.

Guests here can enjoy farm-to-table dining, some of the world's best surf and movies under the stars at the hotel's outdoor cinema.

Whispers of the opening of Aman sister brand, Janu, have been on the lips of travel editors and Aman junkies for years.

Finally, 2023 will see the opening of the brand's debut property, Janu Tokyo. The concept offers the comfort, service and design sensibility of Aman but with a playful spirit - offering guests a more lively, less secluded luxury travel experience.

Designed by Denniston under the leadership of Jean-Michel Gathy, Janu Tokyo will house 120 guest rooms and suites, a 3,500 square metre Janu Spa, as well as offer six dining outlets and bars.

8. Mondrian Singapore

Tatler Asia
Above Mondrian Singapore combines classic Singapore scenes with old Hollywood charm

Straddling Neil Road and Duxton, Mondrian Singapore's mission is simple: to immerse visitors in the city's most vibrant pocket, and to give locals a lively place to play. Like the Jungle Ballroom tropical bar, accessible by a secret tunnel and which features a sunken lava stone bar, and Italian restaurant Bottega di Carna, a collaboration with legendary butcher Dario Cecchini.

There are 304 rooms and suites, including a small number of street-facing shophouse suites.

Los Angeles-based Studio Carter has put a modern, abstract spin on Singapore's shophouses in its design. And while the hotel mostly celebrates old-and-new Singapore, the rooftop pool and Canyon Club bar—flanked by plush cabanas and surrounded by Singapore's downtown skyline—feels very West Hollywood.

9. Sea Sea, Crescent Head, Australia

Tatler Asia
Above Sea Sea brings Australia's sleepy Crescent Head to life

Those familiar with The Slow in Bali will be pleased to know that its founders, George Gorrow and Cisco Tschurtschenthaler, are opening a similar ’70s-inspired hotel in the New South Wales coastal town of Crescent Head.

It will have a similar surf shack chic aesthetic to The Slow, with a focus on food, music, entertainment and art, and promise a roster of musical performances and exhibitions, including a photo exhibition held every six weeks in the hotel’s Room 13.

Sea Sea's food and beverage offerings, curated by Sydney’s respected P&V Wine & Liquor Merchants, are good enough to make it a dining destination on its own.

10. Ritz-Carlton Melbourne, Australia

Tatler Asia

The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne has high hopes—literally—as it promises to be Australia's tallest hotel.

Guests will check in at the Sky Lobby, located on the 80th floor. The hotel's rooms and suites, spread across levels 63 to 79, will offer some of the city's most spectacular views.

In true Ritz-Carlton fashion, there will be some fabulous food and beverage options including fine dining restaurant Atria, helmed by chef Michael Greenlaw— who previously led the kitchen at Melbourne's famed Vue de Monde—which will focus on unusual, hard-to-find and hyper-seasonal ingredients.

11. Shinta Mani Mustang, Nepal

Tatler Asia

More travellers than ever are seeking off-the-grid experiences, which is exactly what Shinta Mani Mustang – A Bensley Collection, will offer its guests when it opens in May 2023.

Mustang is a formerly an isolated kingdom in northern Nepal, and the hotel will be one of the first luxury properties in the region. Bill Bensley, who designed the hotel, has kept the design uncharacteristically minimal in order to place the dramatic surrounding landscapes centre-stage.

Surrounded by the Himalayan Mountains, the 29-suite Shinta Mani Mustang was built using wood, slate and stone sourced across the Tibetan Plateau, boosted by boldly-coloured textiles.

Tatler Tip: Opt for the all-inclusive package, which includes expedited immigration services, roundtrip airport transfers, private adventure guides, sunset drinks and unlimited Tibetan spa treatments.
