Cherry blossom season is all year round—as long as you know where to look

From beautiful pastel pink blooms to its delicate scent, there’s no doubt that cherry blossom season is one of the most beautiful sights to behold. After all, these stunning blossoms are one of the quintessential flowers that symbolise the arrival of spring.

Although cherry blossom season is typically synonymous with Japan’s springtime, it isn’t the only destination to visit for your annual dose of these cherry trees. In fact, various countries in Oceania, Asia and North America are also home to an abundance of these blossoms.

Below, we share ten destinations to visit to catch a glimpse of these flowers.

1. Washington DC, USA

In 1912, the People of Japan planted cherry trees in Washington DC as a token of friendship with the United States. Today, this gift is celebrated with a four-week festival that occurs when cherry blossoms bloom. The festival sees a range of celebratory events from Pink Tie parties and kite flying to cherry blossom afternoon tea spreads and farmers markets.

2. Jerte Valley, Spain

If you’re exploring Spain between March and April, you’ll want to take a trip to Jerte Valley to admire its cherry blossom season. Instead of pink cherry trees, the area is dotted with white cherry trees, turning its hills completely white with blossoms. The annual Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the flowering of these trees and features exhibitions, markets, tasting sessions and more.

3. Beijing, China

Cherry blossom season arrives in Beijing from March to May each year, turning the bustling city into a pink wonderland. Visit Yuyuantan Park from the end of April to the beginning of May and you’ll find around 3,000 pink and white cherry blossom trees in full bloom. The park also holds a cherry blossom viewing festival during spring.

4. Copenhagen, Denmark

The Denmark capital turns pink during cherry blossom season each year. While you’ll be able to find cherry blossoms along various parks and streets within the city, head to Langelinie Park and walk under 200 cherry blossom trees bursting in beautiful shades of pink. The park also holds the annual Copenhagen Sakura Festival where you’ll get to learn more about Japanese culture and arts.

5. Chiang Mai, Thailand

The Land of Smiles turns pink from December to February. While you are able to find these blooms all around the country, head to Chiang Mai’s Doi Suthep-Pui National Park to admire wild Himalayan cherry trees that bloom during the winter months. Also known as Tiger Queen trees, this cherry blossom variety boasts elegant light pink petals.

6. Taichung, Taiwan

Visit the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village in Taichung, Taiwan, in February and catch one of the country’s largest cherry blossom festivals. Apart from admiring the blooms of over 2,000 cherry trees, anticipate cultural performances and night illuminations.

While you’re here, visit Wuling Farm and be transported to cherry blossom haven. Here, find over 20,000 cherry trees of multiple varieties, including Yoshino and Fuji cherry. Look out for the pink lady cherry trees too, a Taiwanese and Japanese cherry tree hybrid that offers stunning rose pink blooms.

7. Jinhae, Korea

While cherry blossoms can be found all around Korea, the southern coastal city of Jinhae offers some of the most breathtaking views of these blossoms. Visit Jehwangsan Park where you will find panoramic views of the park filled with pink and white petals. Or, walk down Anmin Road, a five-kilometre stretch that transforms into a tunnel of cherry blossoms from March to April.

8. Vancouver, Canada

It’s not surprising that Vancouver is home to an abundance of cherry trees. After all, the city’s first 500 cherry blossom trees were gifted from Japanese cities Kobe and Yakohama in the 1930s. The gift was in honour of the Japanese Canadians who fought in the First World War. Today, the city boasts over 40,000 Sakura trees that bloom from February to May.

9. Sao Paulo, Brazil

In the early 1900s, we saw multiple Japanese immigrants moving to Brazil, who also brought cherry blossom seedlings with them. Today, the country has one of the largest Japanese populations outside of Japan and also home to a myriad of cherry trees.

The best spot to witness these blooms is at Parque do Carmo. This park sees over 4,000 trees that bloom from July to August. Each year, the park also hosts the annual cherry blossom festival, an event established by Japanese immigrant Hisayoshi Kataoka, who brought and planted 500 seedlings around the city.

10. Cowra, Australia

Looking for blooms in the later half of the year? Head to Cowra’s Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre from September to October and find the tranquil garden filled with pink and white petals.

If you are visiting in September, keep your eye out for the Sakura Matsuri festival. To celebrate spring, this festival is filled with traditional Japanese performances, tea ceremonies, and a Japanese market filled with traditional food and drinks.
