This year’s list sees Singapore dropping to second best, right after Japan

The Henley Index has announced its 2023 ranking for most powerful passports. This annual index ranks 199 different passports on visa-free access to 227 different travel destinations. 

This year’s ranking sees Japan topping the Henley Index for the fifth consecutive year, with Japanese citizens currently having visa-free access to 193 destinations around the world. While Japan had shared its top spot with Singapore in 2022, this year, our passport drops to second place and ties with South Korea (192 countries).

Germany and Spain follow after the three Asian countries, with both tied in third place. Meanwhile, the United States and Hong Kong dropped by one spot each in the ranking, placing seventh and 19th respectively.

Once again, we see Afghanistan sitting at the bottom of the index, with citizens having access to only 27 countries without a visa.
