The upcoming Mercury retrograde will last from August 24 to September 16. From love and work to health and travel, what does this cosmic event have in store for you?
August is a significant time for slowing down as we have a total of six planets in retrograde by the end of the month—four outer planets (Pluto, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus) and two personal planets (Venus and Mercury). Among the six planets, Mercury retrograde draws the most attention as it rules over communication, intellect and travel, and these areas of our lives are more likely than usual to experience disruptions during this time—hence the technology mishaps and communication breakdown that are often associated with Mercury retrograde.
This is not necessary a bad thing though, because whenever a planet goes into retrograde, it is always an invitation for us to review, reflect and revaluate how the themes governed by that planet are being played out in our lives. So there is no need to freeze and fear whenever Mercury retrograde is near. Like every other cosmic event, there is always beauty and strength to harness from the event, and while some transits are easier to navigate with ease, some others are opportunities for us to learn and grow.

Before moving into retrograde, Mercury has entered its shadow period from August 4, so perhaps you’ve already noticed certain retrograde themes bubbling up. From August 24 to September 16, the planet officially stations retrograde in the sign of Virgo and, traditionally, when these two planets collide we can expect the usual Mercurial themes such as communication and mental activities to be at the forefront. Whatever challenges arise, Virgo reminds us to reflect on the solutions that feel most practical, logical and sensible, but without being overdramatic. With the support of Uranus, there are solutions available for us; the key is to be patient and resist taking premature actions. Unexpected endings are also possible during this time, and while the mind may not fully comprehend the lessons life offers, it is important to trust that greater solutions and ideas are on their way.
On September 4, Mercury and the Sun unite in what is called a “Mercury Cazimi”. On this day, we could receive sudden hits of inspiration that bring revelations, clearing any confusion that Mercury retrograde has potentially stirred up. For example, insights around what needs changing in our lives may come easily to us, so this is an ideal day to journal our thoughts. By September 30, when Mercury leaves its shadow period, we may see the better path that life has planned for us all along. To reach this stage of clarity, make sure you remain flexible and resist clinging on to what is meant to fall away.
