Football & Family

You don’t need to be a sportsperson to immediately recognise the name David Beckham. For the uninitiated, the sportsman is considered by many to be the greatest English footballer of his generation. Through the years, he has transformed from sportsman to brand spokesperson to fashion brand owner and even American soccer club owner. His level of fame is undeniable and almost incomprehensibly extensive.

For our October cover story, Tatler Asia sits down with the man himself, ten years after his retirement from the beautiful game, to discuss his new Netflix documentary, Messi, his legacy and more.

Living in the public eye often means sacrificing privacy, yet social media has allowed celebrities like Beckham to regain some control by choosing when and how to share unfiltered glimpses of family life (see those Beckham family TikTok moments).

A documentary is a different beast, and less easy to control; but Beckham’s decision to share his life story marks a reclamation of his image, one open to—and inviting—outside participation.

Tatler first met Beckham in May, when he was in Macau for the opening of The Londoner Macao, for which he is a long-term brand ambassador and has designed a number of suites.

Beckham, premiered worldwide on Netflix on October 4. In it, he shares his life story—in his own world.

“Many friends have suggested a life documentary,” he says, “but the timing was always up to me. And with this year marking the tenth anniversary of my retirement from football ... it feels perfect.”

Only someone with hindsight honed by decades in the public eye could have the forward-facing perspective to pull off one of the most daring talent acquisitions in recent sports history: signing Lionel Messi to his Inter Miami FC team.

With a career built on both supreme athletic accomplishment and savvy decision-making, Beckham’s trajectory might seem pretty close to perfect itself. Yet there’s more to the man than his record alone can show.

Inside Pullman Singapore Hill Street, a new hotel in the city that honours luxury train travel

How newest hotel Pullman Singapore Hill Street honours luxury train travel.

From taking a trip across the border to hopping on a plane to a relaxing resort, we love taking a quick getaway to rejuvenate ourselves—even if it’s just for the weekend. But with life getting in the way, it’s not always easy to do so.

To curb our wanderlust, we turn to the next best thing: staycations. Joining the ranks of the diverse array of five-star luxury resorts and quaint boutique hotels that Singapore has to offer, is the brand-new Pullman Singapore Hill Street.

The new space isn’t like any typical hotel. In fact, it pays homage to the brand’s roots of luxury train travel. The hotel modernises the George Pullman sleeping car through subtle designs, from the addition of train motifs in each room to the meeting rooms named after iconic train stations around the world.

Hospitality begins before stepping into the hotel. We were welcomed by the friendly Pullman Porters as they came forward to assist with our bags. As we entered the lobby, we were met with a walkway with a stunning mural of vintage carriers—a spot we definitely stopped to take pictures at.

We spent the night in the hotel’s spacious Studio Suite. Stepping in, the first thing we noticed was how the floor-to-ceiling windows filled the room entirely with natural light. Staying on the highest floor meant that the room offered us stunning views of Fort Canning Park. The room is complete with plush bedding, an integrated mini bar, a lounge area and more. The bathroom was spacious and came equipped with a bathtub, rain shower and luxurious toiletries from American-owned beauty brand C.O. Bigelow.

The railroad cabin theme continued past the hallways and into the rooms. Looking closely, we noticed the suite elegantly detailed with vintage accents from brass linings against dark wood to polished fixtures.

DINING

Acclaimed chef Simon Rogan is bringing his sustainable gastronomy to Singapore this October

Acclaimed chef Simon Rogan, the only chef who holds Michelin Green stars across two restaurants: three-Michelin-starred L’Enclume and one-Michelin-starred Roganic Hong Kong.

Few chefs are practising sustainable gastronomy quite like Simon Rogan. The British-born chef and restaurateur is the only international chef who holds Michelin Green stars across two restaurants: three-Michelin-starred L’Enclume and one-Michelin-starred Roganic Hong Kong. He also runs seven other restaurants across the globe and a regenerative farm called “Our Farm” under his restaurant group, Umbel.

Known the world over for being a champion of the farm-to-fork philosophy, Rogan is set to introduce his signature cooking style–centred on classical technique, minimalism and a strong ingredient focus–to Singapore next month From October 3 to 14, Rogan will be taking up residency at La Brasserie at the Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore, as part of the Fullerton World’s Best Chefs series launched in May 2022.

A proponent of the provenance and traceability of ingredients, Rogan will present classic creations from his world-renowned restaurants, as well as special items crafted just for the residency using local, regional, and English ingredients. In particular, his favourite artisanal cheeses will be used in their entirety, following his zero-waste approach.

Take the opening snack in the lunch menu, which utilises aged Berkswell, a hard ewe’s milk cheese from the United Kingdom, to make a pudding caramelised in birch sap, black garlic, and grated truffle. Another creation will see artichokes buried in aromats, tarragon, stout vinegar and Ragstone, a soft, matured white goat’s cheese with a distinct lemony profile. Made by Neal’s Yard Creamery with pasteurised goat’s milk, it is used to stunning effect with a perfectly balanced profile.

“I look forward to cooking in Singapore and bringing my farm-to-fork ethos to one of my favourite cities, which I love for its vibrant food scene,” Rogan says, calling it a “special opportunity” to be a part of The Fullerton World’s Best Chefs series.

Meet the eco-champions saving Nemo and protecting our oceans

In Finding Nemo, a father’s love for his son and determination to protect him serves as an analogy for the need to protect and care for the marine environment. By highlighting the interconnectedness of its ecosystems and the impact that human actions can have on the environment, it urges the need to protect our oceans.

This is the driving force for the upcoming Blue Water EduFest, a non-profit marine conservation event organised by ONE15 Events Management, taking place from November 2 to 4.

The event features a two-day solutions-based conference, the Ocean Collective Summit, where international and regional experts and leaders will take the stage to discuss the ideas, innovations and issues of ocean conservation.

A signature segment of the three-day event is Blue Water Heroes Awards, which recognises and supports eco-champions who have dedicated their lives to protecting our oceans, the marine environment and the coastal communities that depend on them.

These Blue Water Heroes will be honoured at an award ceremony on November 3.

Held as a gala dinner event, the sustainable dining experience will include a showcase by the ten finalists, shortlisted from nominations received from around Southeast Asia. It will unveil how their innovative initiatives and projects are reshaping the world of marine conservation and driving positive impact. Three individuals will be recognised for their achievements that evening and awarded a prize money totalling $50,000 to help fund and accelerate their impact.

Young participants of the Ocean Geographic Antarctic Climate Expedition 2023 led by Dr Sylvia Earle will also share their experiences during the Blue Water Heroes Awards. A live auction featuring exclusive memorabilia and other unique items will complete the evening.
