Winter Wonderland

Boasting sky-high peaks, powder-covered glaciers and Alpine forests, it’s no wonder Switzerland is one of the top destinations for winter sports enthusiasts. The vibrant European gem hosts some of the region’s largest winter resorts, along with panoramic cable cars and scenic trains.

When the day on the slopes winds down, Switzerland opens the door to an après-ski wonderland, offering acres of entertainment with cocktail bars, tempting restaurants, and serene spas—creating an irresistible winter wonderland beyond its runs.

When it comes to Swiss slopes, there are plenty to choose from. Head to St Moritz and explore one of its four main ski areas: Corviglia/Piz Nair, Corvatsch/Furtschellas, Diavolezza and Lagalb. There are plenty of pistes to choose from, ranging from beginner to advanced. With over 40 ski lifts and over 300 kilometres of pistes, you won’t ever have to ski the same run twice. Or, visit Zermatt and ski down Matterhorn mountain, one of Switzerland’s iconic mountain soaring over 14,000 feet above sea level. The town offers over 360 kilometres of pistes and some the highest peaks in the country, with a majority graded red.

If you’re just starting out on the slopes, Saas Fee is the best place to be at. The village is surrounded by 13 peaks spanning 4,000 metres. Various nursery slopes and gentle green runs are available and isolated from main runs—so you won’t be overwhelmed by experienced skiers coming down at high speeds. Separate mountains are also available for tobogganing and winter hiking.

Those who enjoy going off-piste will enjoy a trip to Verbier. The village boasts over 400 kilometres of slopes with the majority being red and black runs. Try out some of the area’s most famous off-piste runs, including Bec des Etagenes, Marlenaz, Croix de Coeur, Col des Mines and Couloir de la Banane.

Those who find the gastronomy scene as important as the slopes can visit Andermatt. Its ski area is split in two—Gemsstock for intermediate red and black runs; and Natschen-Gutsch-Sedrun for gentler green and blue slopes—making it the perfect destination for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Once you’re done exploring the slopes for the day, head to the Apres Ski Train where you can dig into food and imbibe on drinks with the mountains as the backdrop.

Where to get beautiful fresh Christmas trees in Singapore this year

There is something magical about the smell of fresh pine from a live Christmas tree that really puts you in a festive mood. Beloved for their familiar smell and the sturdy branches that hold decorations well, having a fresh Christmas tree adds a luxurious touch to any home.

Thankfully, many of our garden centres and local landscaping companies have been able to import fresh fir trees into Singapore from farms overseas so that we, too, can enjoy live trees (even in this tropical weather) during the most magical time of the year.

As 2023 draws to a close, it is indeed fitting to treat yourself and your family to a gorgeous fir tree.

If you enjoy the traditional way of shopping, you will love browsing and picking out your Christmas tree at Bedok Garden & Landscape. The lovely fresh trees here can only be viewed and purchased in person, with no online store. Another popular florist is Candy Floriculture, which is well known for its gorgeous live Christmas trees that come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit most spaces. The live trees are carefully handpicked to ensure only the highest-quality trees are up for selection.

Sing See Soon is also a yearly favourite when it comes to getting live Christmas trees. This year, the centre is offering lush Fraser Fir Christmas trees and wreaths that come directly from Canada. And finally, we also have Far East Flora, which has long been a go-to when it comes to getting plants, flowers and gardening supplies. However, did you know it also brings in a selection of fresh Noble Fir Christmas trees every year? These live trees bring the magic of Christmas into your home with a lush, natural fragrance and lively needles. They’re skillfully handpicked and delivered to your doorstep for a hassle-free process and a relaxed start to the holiday season.

Yoox Net-a-Porter’s Natalie Lee on sustainability and conscious consumerism in Asia-Pacific

Natalie Lee, general manager of Yoox Net‑a‑Porter for the Asia‑Pacific region and Japan

Think of buying luxury fashion online and Yoox Net‑a‑Porter inevitably comes to mind. The e‑commerce retail group’s online stores are synonymous with not only some of the best high fashion names in the world, but also the emerging brands it incubates.

This success is thanks to e‑commerce leaders such as Natalie Lee, Yoox Net‑a‑Porter’s general manager for the Asia‑Pacific region and Japan, who joined the group in December 2021 and brings with her a wealth of experience in online retail. Lee started her career in the strategic planning team of Kolon FnC, one of the largest fashion companies in South Korea, before working for Yoox while studying for her master’s in business administration in New York, which she shares was her “pivotal moment to transition from bricks and mortar to e‑commerce.”

She found this transition relatively smooth, attributing it to e‑commerce’s data abundance and her hands‑on experience in offline stores. Since then, she has worked at various e‑commerce platforms, including Zalora in Southeast Asia and Coupang in South Korea. She also assumed a leadership position at Vestiaire Collective for the Asia‑Pacific region, before taking on the role of general manager for the same region at Yoox Net‑a‑Porter in 2021. Earlier this year, her responsibilities expanded to include Japan, and she now oversees business localisation and value creation across the regions.

Under Lee’s leadership, Yoox Net‑a‑Porter has initiated several transformative projects that focus on bridging the digital and physical worlds. “To compete with other [brands] with physical stores, we’ve been actively exploring the opportunities to engage with our most valuable customers physically by hosting various standalone event collaborations and exclusive style suites,” she says.

Sustainability is a central tenet of Yoox Net‑a‑Porter. According to Lee, 90 per cent of its global customers consider sustainability credentials when making purchasing decisions. To make these values more accessible to its customers, all four of its platforms have dedicated verticals to showcase brands and partners committed to both sustainability and ethics for the planet and its people. Lee mentions that Net‑a‑Porter’s Net Sustain range has grown since its 2019 launch and will continue to expand in the coming year.

Her personal style mirrors the qualities she champions professionally, as reflected in her preference for understated labels and their classic styles, such as The Row and Toteme. Fashion leaders such as Lee are setting the pace for a sustainable fashion future that resonates with the conscious consumer. For now, Yoox Net‑a‑Porter will continue to prioritise quality and timeless pieces.
