Alan Chan: Collecting Inspiration for Design, a highly anticipated book documenting the design maestro's extensive collection of Asian artefacts and Chinese art, has been in the works for the last couple of years. “I have been collecting for over 40 years—from old postcards to furniture to jewellery to calligraphy to whatever you can name,” Chan says. “I always wanted to find a way to express to people what creativity means.” The book, authored by Hong Kong architecture, design and art critic Catherine Shaw and published by Rizzoli, is set to be released in January.

That isn’t the only thing that has been keeping  Chan busy, though. In 2021, he opened ZNS Jewellery at Prince’s Building in Central. A collaboration with fine jewellery brand KS Sze & Sons, the shop offers everyday luxury pieces made with diamonds and 18-karat gold, all produced in Hong Kong. The new brand’s design philosophy is inspired by the universe and the meaning of life. Chan, who turns 72 in January 2022, is proud of his legendary status. The designer, artist and brand consultant has been one of the biggest names in the creative industries in Hong Kong and across the region for decades. Fans of his work—from art critics to brands—will be glad to hear that retirement is not on the cards for  Chan: “I’m having so much fun.”
