In 2022, architect, artist and collector added another string to his bow, as an author. His book East Meets East: Contemporary Asian Design, published to mark the 30th anniversary of his architecture practice CL3, is a celebration of Asian design and aesthetics, and their contemporary impact. In 2021, he and his wife, interior designer Lavina, donated some 90 pieces by 26 artists from their Living Collection, the world’s largest private collection of art from Hong Kong, to M+, Hong Kong’s new public contemporary art museum. Lim had previously made a big name for himself in several different creative spheres simultaneously. As an artist, he produces sumptuous large-scale installations and has twice represented Hong Kong at the Venice Biennale’s International Architectural Exhibition, in 2006 and 2010. As an architect, CL3 has been behind numerous prestige projects, including Hong Kong art hub H Queen’s, as well as Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, Hong Kong’s East Hotel and the Millennium Mitsui Garden Hotel Tokyo. As a collector, he and Lavina have spent more than a decade building the Living Collection. The couple are long-term patrons of Asia Art Archive, which documents art history in the region; and Para Site, Hong Kong’s oldest contemporary art centre. A trustee of Cornell University, William Lim is also on the acquisition committee of the Tate and the gallery committee of Asia Society. He is the father of Kevin and Vincent, both of whom are also designers who co-run their own studios.
