These Bollywood actresses are challenging norms and breaking boundaries by playing powerful female characters

Bollywood has been largely male-dominated, but in the recent decade, films led by women playing strong and inspiring characters have changed the history of Indian cinema.

Gone were the days when females were only portrayed as submissive, “belonging in the kitchen”, or damsels in distress, often required to be “saved”, while their male counterparts were masculine and fighting off villains.

Although there's still ways to go to end the male-female disparity, through stereotype-defying characters, women are taking back the narrative and it has been game-changing. Here, we take a look at some films with women in empowering roles and the Bollywood actresses that play them.

Alia Bhatt in ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language biographical crime drama film which stars Alia Bhatt in the title role. This biopic centres on the true story of Gangubai Kothewali, who was a social activist, prostitute, and madam of a brothel in the Kamathipura area of Mumbai during the 60s and one of the most dreaded women of Mumbai's underworld. She fought for the rights of sex workers and their children and improved their living conditions.

The film shattered all box office records in India, and Bhatt’s performance in the role of Gangubai Kathiawadi earned her widespread critical acclaim. Not only did the film receive 15 nominations and won 10 awards at the 68th Filmfare Awards, one of the biggest awards in Indian cinema, but Bhatt herself also bagged the Best Actress accolade.

Kangana Ranaut in ‘Queen’

Queen is a 2014 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film which stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. The film follows Rani Mehra, a diffident Punjabi girl from a conservative family in New Delhi who embarks on her honeymoon to Paris and Amsterdam by herself after her fiancé calls off their wedding. As she travels the world and meets new people, she gains new experiences and discovers her own identity.

Due to the nature of the storytelling, the film was groundbreaking for its time. It built a strong cult following and became one of the decade's best films. In fact, the British Film Institute ranked Queen amongst the ten greatest Bollywood films of the 21st century. Ranaut’s outstanding performance as the titular character garnered widespread critical acclaim, winning her the National Film Award for Best Actress.

Deepika Padukone in ‘Piku’

Piku is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film which stars Amitabh Bachchan, Irrfan Khan, and Deepika Padukone. The story centres on a dysfunctional father-daughter relationship between Bhaskor Banerjee (Bachchan) and Piku Banerjee (Padukone).

The elder Banerjee is an overbearing and selfish man who’s unnecessarily obsessed with his health, while the younger Banerjee is a hardworking architect who’s regularly stressed by her job–this often leads to arguments. On a road trip, taxi driver Rana Chaudhary (Irrfan Khan) gets caught between the two as he drives them to Kolkata, and together, they go on a roller coaster ride to self-discovery.

Piku emerged as a commercial success worldwide and critics sang praises for Padukone, who wowed the audience with her stellar performance. At the 61st Filmfare Awards, Piku received eight nominations and won five awards, including Best Actress.

Sridevi in ‘English Vinglish’

English Vinglish is a 2012 Indian Hindi-language comedy-drama film which stars the late powerhouse actress Sridevi as Shashi Godbole, a quiet, sweet-tempered housewife and small entrepreneur who makes snacks and sweets. Because of her inability to speak and understand English, she endures mocking from her well-educated husband and daughter. She enrols in an English-speaking course and it helps her rediscover herself, gain self-respect, and reassert her value as a mother and a wife.

The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, receiving a five-minute standing ovation. When English Vinglish was released theatrically, it received universal critical acclaim, with reviewers raving over Sridevi's performance, who was later hailed as the “Meryl Streep of India“. The Times of India called it “easily one of the best films of 2012!” and Sridevi's performance “a masterclass for actors”.

Vidya Balan in ‘Kahaani’

Kahaani is a 2012 Indian Hindi-language thriller that stars Vidya Balan as Vidya Bagchi. She plays the role of a heavily pregnant woman who travels from London to Kolkata to find her missing husband during the festival of Durga Puja. Still, everyone she questions denies having ever met her husband. Her efforts make her the target of an assassin dispatched by her husband’s secretive employers. The film, which unfolds like the pages of a gripping novel, explores themes of feminism and motherhood in a male-dominated Indian society.

Critics praised the screenplay, the cinematography, and Balan's performance, calling the actress a “blessed one” and praising her for choosing such difficult scripts only to make it look like a cakewalk. Kahaani went on to win several awards, including three National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards. The latter included an accolade for Best Actress (Balan).
