Wealth With Sophia

This International Women’s Day, gather your girlfriends for a money date and take steps towards gender equity. This Wealth With Sophia column addresses the importance of talking about money, how to make money dates worthwhile and why they need to happen regularly

This year, the theme for International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity. It's the most thought-provoking one yet. And it’s a theme that challenges us all to take action towards progressing and achieving gender equity in our communities and beyond.

At Sophia, we have one idea of an important action you can take to empower yourself and other women around you. What is this radical act of empowerment, you may ask? It’s called a money date, and there's no better time than now, with International Women's Day upon us, to seize the opportunity and set one up. Here's how...

What is a money date?

A money date is an intentional conversation about money matters with yourself, a friend, your friendship circle, your family members or colleagues at work. So, why do women need to talk about money? Normalising having conversations about money as early as possible in our lives is key to cultivating a healthier relationship with money and helping to build wealth.

Women have faced numerous challenges in building wealth. In both personal and professional settings, women often don’t receive any financial literacy training or talk enough about money with families, friends or colleagues. The gender pay gap has meant that women earn less than men, which limits their ability to save and invest. The gender investing gap has shown us that women invest less and not often enough. And then there are traditional gender roles, which mean that women prioritise supporting their families and take on the unpaid work of caregiving at home—further limiting their ability to create wealth. As a result, globally women retire with a quarter less wealth than men, which widens further in the highest-skilled roles.

Money dates can be life-changing

The humble money date can create a tremendous positive impact towards building a more gender equal world. These money conversations are crucial in helping women on their wealth creation journeys. Why is it so important to prioritise these particular conversations? Quite simply, money dates can help women reflect on financial goals and inspire them to share the challenges as well as the successes of actions taken in a supportive “safe-space” with a trusted circle of friends and colleagues. These honest conversations can move the needle on helping gain clarity on goals and motivation to take action.

Every money date has its purpose

Increasing numbers of women are having money dates, but we need even more women to start and continue this empowering practice. Money dates can come in various shapes and forms, but in my experience, the very best ones will have some structure or a theme, which is decided by the group in advance so that everyone can prepare, share, debate and learn from one another. Someone can lead the discussion and everyone can then take turns sharing and reflecting on the topic. Let the conversation flow freely once you’ve all had a chance to speak.

Sometimes, a money date can give you a perspective on an investing blindspot you might have. On a particularly memorable ‘Asset Allocation’ themed money date I once had with my Lean In circle, I realised my portfolio’s asset allocation was less diversified than I had intended it to be—and I rectified it immediately after. Each of us that evening took away some key insights on actions to take. We kept each other accountable by following up with one another after the session. Money dates can be a wonderful part of your wealth creation journey, so don’t forget to keep them going.

5 steps to having an empowering money date

  1. Start with your friendship circle or trusted colleagues at work, and branch out from there
Conversations about money can be sensitive, so it’s good to kickstart the process with people you trust and see regularly. However, we urge you to keep progressing on this journey, and start other money conversations with different groups of women. Empowerment has a ripple effect.
  2. Agree on some key values to guide your discussion
We suggest agreeing on values such as honesty, openness and confidentiality as the basis of your money date. Make sure that everyone is on board and then get talking.
  3. Pick a theme and set an agenda
It could be as simple as discussing everyone’s money goals for the year, or personal money challenges and ways to overcome them. You could also pick an investment theme to talk about. The best money dates are those with a purpose, but with enough spontaneity to encourage true connection and action in your circle.
  4. Share resources and keep each other accountable
I’m always amazed at the things I learn from other women on a money date. Make it a point to share resources among your circle from things you’ve discussed. Whether it’s a tip on the best credit card for travel rewards, a great ETF online database, or that crypto cold wallet someone uses—sharing is caring. And following up with further information and resources after your money date is another way to keep each other accountable on your respective money journeys.
  5. Make it fun—and regular
Money dates are meant to be empowering, but also fun. Host it at home, at a favourite cafe or a buzzy watering hole. Whatever you choose, it’s a time to connect, inspire and find joy and support in helping each other in the topic of money. Commit to regular money dates to keep you all on track.

This International Women’s Day, unleash your financial feminist and help others on their journeys by setting those money dates.
