In his non-fiction book AI Superpowers, artificial intelligence expert Kai Fu Lee peers into a near future where the duopoly of the US and China leads the charge in AI innovation. The former president of Google China, who has written two books on the subject, also outlines the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs and how people and governments can navigate the dramatic changes.

Apart from being one of greatest thinkers on AI, Lee is also the CEO and founder of Sinovation Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in AI, deep tech, robotics, new energy and more. He leads the company’s Artificial Intelligence Institute, which is “committed to speeding up the integration of AI technology and real world applications” through the development of talent, research and venture building. In March 2023, the CEO announced Project AI 2.0, a new start-up under Sinovation that will develop platforms and applications for the next phase of artificial intelligence. Lee’s brainchild has already secured funds and attracted interest from global experts keen to shape the future.

Reflecting its evolution from a virtual concierge company to an AI-assistance firm, Supahands rebranded itself as Supa. Today, the Kuala Lumpur-based company founded by Mark Koh provides image annotation services—labelling, visualisation, insights—for data scientists and machine learning engineers. In other words, Supa transforms unlabelled data into high-quality information, which then helps “create purposeful AI”. For online shopping giant Carousell, for example, it delivered more accurate training data, which was used to improve search and recommendation functions for a more personalised shopping experience.

Koh’s Supa also proves the potential of AI as a useful tool. The data-labelling company emphasises that “human experts will always have a role to play in the AI lifecycle for years to come” and thus integrates a multinational workforce in its machine-led platform.

Tang Xiao’ou, co-founder, SenseTime (Hong Kong)

The era of artificial general intelligence (AGI) draws nearer and nearer. In April 2023, SenseTime introduced SenseNova, its AGI-geared foundation model that has capabilities in natural language processing, content generation, and custom model training. The AI powerhouse also unveiled several AI-generated content applications, including SenseChat, its large-scale language model that may rival the popular platform ChatGPT. Trained on data that includes Chinese context, the firm’s version can help developers debug code, provide medical advice and summarise information from documents.

Tang Xiao’ou, who is a professor of information engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (and also a billionaire), founded the Hong Kong-headquartered company in 2014 and has helped lead the firm’s research. Since then, SenseTime has been actively shaping an AI-powered future, introducing breakthroughs in decision intelligence, autonomous driving, computer vision and more.
