Jo Kukathas’ love for theatre blossomed at an early age. Apart from the influence of her father, K.Das, who was part of the Malayan Art Theatre Group, she was drawn to the transformative power of theatre, which allowed her—a shy girl—to inhabit the lives of other people. In 1989, she co-founded the Instant Café Theatre (ICT) to entertain audiences, as well as inform them about current events through the use of satire. Over the decades, the award-winning writer, director and actor has brought memorable characters such as Curry Spice, deputy minister YB and beauty pageant runner-up Ribenna Berry to life. Her advice to young creatives? Embrace emotion. “[N]erves are always going to be there; even I still feel it before going on stage,” she said to Tatler in a recent interview. “If you’re not nervous, something is wrong—and a lot of creativity comes from nervousness and chaos.”

For his work, the creative director has received numerous honours, including a Legends 2023 accolade by his alma mater Pratt Insitute and a Gawad CCP para sa Sining award, the highest distinction from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. “Each time, the design process is for me an opportunity to create something new, something better, more comfortable and fun,” said architect Tan Kay Ngee to Tatler in 2023. The principal architect, who is known for incorporating Asian influences in his work, is behind masterful projects such as the Singapore Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo (which looks like a musical box), the BreadTalk International Headquarters (which resembles layered bread slices) and the Two Brothers, one of 12 villas for the Commune by the Great Wall in China. In 2023, Tan received the President’s Design Award, a prestigious honour that he considers “...very meaningful. It helps me to look back at a journey started some 40 years ago, and it’s heartening to know that my work, my approach to design are appreciated”.
