Through mentorship, support and funding, these business whizzes are helping micro, small and medium enterprises remain competitive

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are hailed as “the backbone of the Asia-Pacific region’s economy” by The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific hails m, citing their resilient nature and ability to create jobs and drive innovation in domestic markets. Recognising the importance of MSMEs in creating a healthy economy, the forward-thinking business leaders on Asia’s Most Influential have made it their mission to champion local businesses, which account for 97 per cent of all enterprises in the region. Through their associations or agencies, these MSME advocates provide what businesses need the most: support via programmes and mentorship, including the tools to digitise operations as well as access to larger markets and funding, all of which are needed by enterprises to flourish.

Apart from his leadership roles in food and beverage company RFM Corporation, Jose Concepcion III is the founder of Go Negosyo, the non-profit organisation that empowers over a million MSMEs in the Philippines. With the goal of alleviating poverty by promoting an entrepreneurial mindset, he spearheads Go Negosyo’s programmes, which include mentorship encounters, public-private partnerships and national summits. 3M on Wheels, for example, is a free mentorship programme that has provided one-on-one coaching and financing solutions to more than 2,000 MSMEs and leaders across the country.

In January 2024, Go Negosyo announced its partnership with the Cooperative Development Authority to boost agriculture entrepreneurship in the country. Concepcion, who also lends his expertise to the government as the Private Sector Advisory Council lead for the jobs sector, announced Go Negosyo’s plans to hold 50 free mentorship events this year.

Ding Hong Sing champions small and medium enterprises (SMEs) through his role as the president of SME Association Malaysia. Founded in 1995, the organisation supports the development and advocates for solutions for local enterprises through conferences, seminars and various projects, including its SME Academy, which offers a wide selection of online video courses on useful topics, including for example, those on digital supply chain and social media marketing.

To keep up with global standards, Ding has advised enterprises to adopt an ESG (environmental, social and governance) framework, as well as called on the government to allocate more funds for the digitalisation of local businesses. In late 2023, the Malaysian government signalled its support of enterprises by announcing loans and financing worth RM44 billion for MSMEs in its 2024 budget.

Now the chairman of the Singapore Economic Development Board, Png Cheong Boon has long supported SMEs as the former CEO of Enterprise Singapore. Png, who held the position from 2008 to 2023, has been instrumental in helping small and medium enterprises grow, remain competitive and ultimately contribute to Singapore’s economy.

In his year-in-review speech for Enterprise Singapore, the leader highlighted the Centres of Innovations that support SMEs, as well as the expansion of the Global Innovation Alliance, which allows technology SMEs to connect with acceleration programmes in the world. Under his leadership, Enterprise Singapore assisted 17,200 SMEs in their transformation efforts and, through its partners, also helped “27,000 SMEs, of which majority were micro and small enterprises, through business advisories, capability development workshops and upgrading initiatives”.
