Located just outside the buzzing epicentre of Causeway Bay, Bella Vita is tucked away on the 11th floor of the Cubus building and serves Tuscan cuisine in a decidedly contemporary setting. A rather awkward and skinny layout for the main dining area, it does offer private dining rooms on either side as well as a cosy terrace perfect for after work drinks.

The evening commences with two very shaky starters; the classic heirloom tomato and burrata dish is so bland it is begging for lashings of salt, while the tomatoes themselves are embarrassingly under ripe. The signature scampi cappuccino is a watery broth bordering on insipid and one-dimensional in flavour. We fare better with our main courses – the Iberico lamb rack is cooked to order and tender, and the “Super Prime” tenderloin, though standard, is delicious and juicy. An array of inviting sauces is available to accompany it but nothing else – side dishes must be ordered. To finish, the lemon tart is mostly crust and meringue with the scantest layer of sharp lemon curd, while the molten filling inside the white chocolate fondant seems to have split resulting in an oily mess and is overall much too sweet.

A comprehensive range of wines with many available by the glass are on offer here, with staff happy to make suggestions and provide multiple tastings.

Service cannot be faulted; staff are extremely keen and accommodating. The one downside of the evening, however, is the overwhelming stench of cigarettes emanating from one of our servers.

Price   $$$$

A meal for two with wine will reach HK$2,000, which considering the lack of consistency, is somewhat excessive.
