Walking through a faux Chinese temple entrance, guests will be transported back to old-world China, with a main dining area that mimics an ancient courtyard with its dark wood colours and private rooms named after eight dynasties (Qin, Han, Sui, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing) lining the restaurant. Tasteful red lanterns hang overhead, with decorative Chinese art and vases adding to the rich heritage of the space. Tables are spaciously set apart, allowing groups of all sizes to enjoy their meals in peace.

The menu is divided into different regions of the country, offering Cantonese, Shanghai, Sichuan, Beijing, Chiu Chow and Macau dishes. We start with the Chengdu hot and spicy chicken that delivers exactly what it promises, impressing us with its authentic spiciness. A restaurant signature, the crisp-fried crab claw with five spices and garlic pepper is de-shelled for easy eating, and covered with a generous helping of fried garlic. The braised pork ball stuffed with diced abalone with superior chicken and oyster sauce, although cooked well, was one-note in terms of flavour. The fried red rice with sweet corn, dried turnip, spring onion and pine nuts is satisfying and filling without being too greasy, with each grain yielding a springy bite.

The wine lists impresses with its well-curated selection of labels spanning both old and new world wines, many of which are available by the glass. The tea menu is also worth a gander, with several premium blends that match well with the cuisine.

Versed in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, staff at Dynasty 8 are friendly and efficient, ensuring that our teacups are never empty. Servers will happily recommend dishes to those unfamiliar with Chinese cuisine.

A filling lunch for two ordering from the à la carte menu comes to approximately MOP600, which we find to be great value for money considering the authentic regional cuisine and friendly service.
