Frites

European   |   $ $ $ $   |   Quarry Bay

The ground floor of an office building is the unlikely location for this Belgian beer hall, providing generously portioned comfort food and a wide range of beers

On the ground floor of Oxford House at Taikoo Place, the open space has been transformed into a laid-back Belgian pub with a warm, inviting atmosphere thanks in part to the dominant wooden walls and vintage light fixtures. Popular with young professionals in the area for after-work drinks, the long tables and cushioned benches add to Frites’ conviviality.

As with its previous location in Central, Frites offers a range of generously portioned Belgian comfort food that pairs well with beer. Neatly pre-mixed, the steak tartare offers all the trimmings and is topped with a quail egg yolk, served with a small salad and thin slices of grilled baguette. Mussels are a highlight on the menu, and while the Frites house mussels with diced tomato, garlic, onion, a light cream and fresh chives is enjoyable with its light and clean flavour, we prefer the laksa mussels. The shellfish is swimming in a flavourful curry sauce consisting of coconut cream, lemongrass and kaffir lime that has just a hint of spice. If you still have room for dessert, Frites offers a small range of sweets, from Belgian waffles and apple tarte tatin to crème brûlée and sticky date pudding.

The Belgian beer hall has an extensive beer bible that caters to all preferences, with an impressive range of draught and craft brews. The manager is knowledgeable on the beer offerings, so ask for recommendations if you need help.

Overall, service is efficient, although we found it difficult at times to get the attention of servers despite the open layout of the space.

A filling meal for two including beer comes to approximately HK$1,000, which we find to be fair value for money considering the quality of food and friendly atmosphere.
