Located on the first floor of 1 Lyndhurst Tower, there is a separate entrance to Fukuji along Lyndhurst Terrace with a short staircase that leads into the restaurant’s dedicated bar area, Fubar. Inside, there is a focus on a discreet and private dining experience, with seating available in one of five teppan rooms (seating up to seven or eight guests each), or along the sushi bar. A joint collaboration between Elite Concepts and Fook Lam Moon, interiors feature dark cherry wood, red bronze, and marble, with the lighting kept dim to create a somewhat mysterious atmosphere. Seating in the teppan rooms are comfortable, although we noted that there was no ambient music playing overhead, which can make lulls in conversation slightly uncomfortable.
When making reservations, guests will be asked whether they prefer to be seated in a teppan room or along the sushi bar, although a la carte sushi items may still be ordered to enjoy in the former. The teppanyaki menu is kept simple, with a focus on high quality beef, abalone, and other premium seafood items. The teppanyaki course for two offers a good selection of menu offerings. The generously portioned Japanese abalone (weighing in at 400g) was fresh and unctuous, served with a bright sea urchin sauce that helped to enhance the flavours of the ocean. The Miyazaki sirloin was cooked to our requested doneness and seasoned lightly with salt and pepper, with the meat just fatty enough to allow a favourable balance between textures. The excess fat cut from the meat was saved to cook the leaf mustard fried rice; each fragrant pearl of rice retained an al dente texture, and benefitted from the subtle meaty taste from the beef fat. Each meat course is preceded by a vegetable dish, which helps to temper the pace of the meal.
There is a good selection of sake available here, spanning various regions in Japan with most 720ml bottles ranging from HK$800 to HK$1,800 each. There is also a focus on Japanese whiskies here, with Taketsuru, Yoichi and Miyagikyo available both by the bottle and glass.
Friendly and courteous, servers at Fukuji are well versed in the menu and confident when prompted for suggestions. However, it is difficult at times to get the attention of a server as the dining areas are all closed off into separate rooms.
The private dining experience will cost you a pretty penny, with the teppanyaki course for two, inclusive of seven courses, priced at HK$3,400. Expect to pay more if you add drinks to the order.
