Review
With stunning panoramic views of the skyline and Victoria Harbour, and interiors that look as if they were a film set designer’s depiction of China for the next installment of James Bond, Hutong gets a rather unfair rap for being a restaurant for tourists. While it is true that on any given night, a few of the tables are indeed filled with out-of-towners, that shouldn’t discourage locals from going—the food is excellent, and reason enough to warrant a visit. Take the green asparagus dressed with white sesame appetiser as an example—so simple in ingredients and presentation, yet so deliciously fragrant that we’re surprised we’d never come across it until now. We couldn’t get enough of the fiery red lantern crispy soft-shell crab with Sichuan dried chilli, and found ourselves in a chopstick duel while digging through the bowl of peppers for the final piece. The wine list is extensive, and the service cannot be faulted: it’s clear the staff know the menu inside out, and are always on hand to help guide diners through the men and accommodate their spice tolerance.
Tatler Tip
Request a table by the window directly in front of the restaurant’s entrance, or slightly to the right, for the best view of the harbour.
