Kwun Hoi Heen is a popular destination for a no-frills suburban Chinese meal or dim sum lunch. Far way enough from the hustle and bustle of Macau city, this classic family-style Chinese restaurant overlooks the famous Hac Sa beach in Coloane. Opened since 1993, this Westin Resort restaurant is showing its age, but the homey atmosphere and panoramic sea view make for a comfortable environment and provide a moment of calm. Beware, as during the peak dim sum hours on the weekend, the noise level can get loud as conversations bounce around the low-ceilinged room.
The menu offers classic Cantonese cuisine, and there is, intriguingly, a full page dedicated to lettuce wraps, with seven types of fillings to choose from. We started off with the two dim sum specials, including nicely executed steamed tri-colour prawn dumplings. The seafood balls are gigantic and each filled with three succulent pieces of prawns. The two variations of steamed rice ﬂour rolls offer deliciously different renditions of the dim sum staple. We love the nicely contrasting texture of minced cuttlefish and deep-fried twisted dough sticks wrapped in rice flour roll, as well as the other version with conpoy and dried shrimp toppings. Moving on to a la carte dishes, the sweet and sour pork with pineapple was a huge disappointment because of the thick and overly sugary sauce. The braised asparagus with supreme mushroom suffers from the same problem of an over-thickened sauce, but the vegetable and mushrooms are nice and fresh. Our next choice was fried rice wrapped in lotus leaf, recommended if one requires something more substantial. Although loaded with conpoy, chicken, and shrimp, the rice was without much flavour and we needed to add a bit of soy sauce to give it a kick. Options for desserts range from Chinese puddings, to sweet soup and dumplings. Our coconut pudding is full of flavour and deliciously sweet, with a wobbly, silky smooth texture.
The restaurant itself does not serve wine, but diners can order from the hotel’s lobby lounge downstairs, which offers a slim selection of wines and liquors. Staff were trying their best to assist, but the back-and-forth telecom checking and general logistics did not work out efficiently.
In general, the service is friendly and welcoming. Yet the staff could offer better hospitality when the restaurant gets busy. There was no one to refill our tea pots, not to mention our cups, and seemed strangely reluctant to take our orders.
Kwun Hoi Heen is good for inexpensive dim sum lunch and the portion of most dishes are large enough for a group of four to share. A satisfying meal for two with wine should cost around MOP350 per head. Set menus with prices starting from HK$688 for two are also available.
