Located along Central’s Wyndham Street, Mama San offers pan-Asian cuisine with a serious kick. Interiors are trendy with dark woods and leathers, paired with dim lighting and catchy tunes to match the atmosphere. The menu consists of both classic and modern interpretations of dishes, and we often begin with the oyster with red nahm jihm, fresh coriander and deep-fried shallots—a fine balance of tanginess and spice with the freshness of the bivalve. The crispy “School of Prawns” with fried garlic, chilli salt, iceberg lettuce and lime is also a crowd favourite, particularly when paired with a crisp beer or creative cocktail. Many dishes are big enough to share, so visit with a group of friends to sample more of the menu’s offerings. Service is friendly without being too invasive, although we found it difficult at times to catch the eye of a server. When making reservations, request a seat by the window overlooking Wyndham Street for a little more space and the people-watching opportunity.
