Mezzo

This Italian-American grill will win you over with an extremely attentive staff and hearty renditions of classic comfort food

Walking into Mezzo is similar to being presented with a nineties’ time capsule: the furnishings reflect a bygone aesthetic that would not be seen in recent hotels. String lights and kitschy vintage posters adorn the walls, giving the restaurant a charming retro vibe. The warm lighting, upbeat background music and colourful plush seating remind us of old-school Italian-American bistro that are owned by families for generations. Diners of this restaurant tend to be more mature and dressed to the nines, but they are greeted by the waiters in a warm and familiar manner — as if they are welcoming regular customers at a neighbourhood joint.

Patrons who appreciate the cosy atmosphere of Mezzo will not be disappointed by the hearty food: you’ll be well on your way to a food coma with the generous portions the restaurant serves. Be sure to leave some stomach real estate for the small bites — or “cichetis” in Italian — which come in sets of three or four. American classics, such as buffalo wings and mozzarella sticks, are to be found next to an array of Italian appetisers, including bruschettas and marinated olives. Those who are craving for a creamy and savoury treat will be satisfied with the cream of wild mushroom soup with truffle oil, where large bits of porcini, white mushrooms and shiitake mushrooms — accompanied with the iconic truffle scent— can be found in every sip. Porcini mushrooms are also the star of the Aborio risotto, but the large chunks of forest porcini mushrooms can be slightly overwhelming when paired with the extremely rich risotto. The Mezzo signature pizza rightfully deserves the title: The decadent dish is done to a perfect crisp and laden with generous portions of salami, pepperoni and chilli beef. Seafood fans should not miss the spaghetti with lobster and truffle oil, featuring a half portion of succulent Boston lobster tossed with white wine sauce, garlic and parsley.

The restaurant features an extensive wine menu, and a special rotation of boutique wines — from New World to classic Italian grapes. The second glass on this promotional menu comes half-priced. The staff is highly knowledgeable about tasting notes and specific ingredients in the dishes that will pair well.

The service at Mezzo was one of the best qualities from our dining experience. The waiters are very well-trained and remained attentive and personable — making you feel like you’re the only table they are serving — even as the restaurant got packed on a weekend night.

Dinner for two came to about HK $1,400, a good deal as the order included several appetizers and small plates, two mains, dessert, and wine and beer. Your appetite will be more than satisfied by the generous portions.
