Located at the Sofitel hotel, Privé is a romantic French fine dining restaurant with views of the old city and historic sites of Macau. The main dining area is decorated with warm wood panelling, and copper and cream colours, easily seating up to 30 guests within a relaxing, cosy, and friendly atmosphere. Tabletops are equally decadent, with each place setting including high quality glassware, chinaware, and silverware.
The small menu includes an appetising array of signature French dishes with some items cooked or prepared by tableside, which adds interest and fun for the diners. In addition to the a la carte menu, there is a tasting menu priced at MOP668, or MOP 1,056 with the option of wine pairings. The salmon gravlax with homemade blinis is a light and delicate dish that is a good start to any meal. Another recommended appetiser is the combination of fine de claire oysters fresh, which is gratinated with champagne sabayon and lemon zest. The Australian wagyu steak tartare is another speciality of the restaurant, and is made to order by the chef at your table. The wagyu beef is mixed with just the right seasoning, and is served with toast, and is in our opinion one of the best versions in Macau. For meat lovers, there is the impressive chateaubriand for two, which is finished at your table and served with dauphinoise potatoes, green asparagus, carrots and a delectable béarnaise sauce. Strawberries à la Privé, cooked at your table with a dash of Grand Marnier, is a wonderful way to end the meal.
There is a wonderful selection of international wines by the glass on the menu, but more impressive are the flights of wines, which each include a group of three 50ml wines that you can order if you are in a mood for adventure. There are some decent French labels on the list without being decadent, but also labels from Germany, which we had the value for money Dr L from Ernst Loosen 2013 and from New Zealand, we tried the Craggy Range Te Muna Road Pinot Noir 2011, which was a perfect match for our steak tartare.
The service was friendly, attentive and efficient with the manager doing the rounds in the restaurant and checking on the guests, which makes for a pleasant atmosphere.
A meal for two is around MOP1,500 including wines is very reasonable considering the view, service and quality of the food.
