Shanghai Lu Yang Cun・上海綠楊邨
Restaurant ・ Chinese・Shanghai
Conveniently located on the 11th floor of Causeway Bay’s World Trade Centre, Shanghai Lu Yang Cun is a popular venue for weary shoppers, tourists, and locals alike. The restaurant is laid out like a typical Chinese eatery, and while there is plenty of space between tables to make for a comfortable dining experience, the boisterous main dining room can make it difficult to converse during busy hours – request one of the four private rooms when booking to enjoy your meal in peace.
A plethora of traditional Shanghainese fare can be found on the menu, which is neatly categorised into a handful of sections with pictures of some of the more popular dishes for the uninitiated. We begin our meal with the deep-fried bean curd sheet filled with vegetables, which is a meat-free dish that is both satisfying and filling. A signature dish, the “Lu Yang” clove-flavoured chicken is delightfully moreish, not requiring any of the dipping sauce it’s served with. Less successful are the noodles in spring onion sauce with dried shrimp – the noodles were a touch overcooked, and the sauce was unable to bring enough fragrance to the dish to add flavour. A Shanghainese meal is not complete without trying the xiao long bao – here, there is a nice proportion of hot soup and pork, with the dumpling skin at just the right thickness. For dessert, we enjoyed the mashed red bean pancake that provided just enough sweetness to round out the meal.
Wines by the glass are limited to two options for both red and white, although those looking to splurge on a bottle will find a wider selection. Guests will also find a good variety of cognac, whisky and Chinese wines (hua diao, mao tai) on offer.
Service can be a little hit or miss, and despite visiting during non-peak hours, we found it difficult at times to get the attention of a server. However, overall, servers were cordial and able to provide ample introductions to dishes.
A filling meal for two will set you back approximately HK$600, which we find to be very reasonable considering the authentic cuisine.
