String

Wan Chai

This late-night karaoke spot in Wan Chai features a broad selection of champagnes and high-end wines, as well as an extensive food menu from Megan’s Kitchen downstairs

Wan Chai may not be the first place that comes to mind when you're looking for an upscale bar, but String tries its best to flip the stereotype on its head with its focus on premium drink and comfortable surroundings. Located on a busy street that is otherwise filled with casual noodle bars, snack shops and tiny shops peddling bargain tat, the bar offers an attempt at glamour with its Prince-esque purple velvet decor and focus on a wide range of champagnes (rated by top critics including Robert Parker, of course) and impressive magnums. It's a place where you can also karaoke with a side of hotpot, as the venue is owned by the same company that runs Megan's Kitchen down below. The place is clearly frequented by regulars who come for a fun fix of tunes and bubbles or a strong dram of whiskey and a cigar, but don't come expecting the bells and whistles of a world class cocktail lounge.
