Review

On a clear day or a clement evening, visitors to the 32nd-floor bar at the top of East hotel in Tai Koo can enjoy stunning views of Hong Kong’s harbour and the city’s many skyscrapers. Relax on the expansive deck to the sound of lounge music and choose from a good selection of wines hailing from various regions and countries, as well as bubbles should the occasion call for them. A considered cocktail list is comprised predominantly of the bar’s own creations. These are balanced in flavour, rarely overly sweet or sour, and often refreshing in keeping with the alfresco seating—additional soft seating indoors offers a comfortable respite from bad weather. With expert bartenders on hand, classic cocktails can easily be prepared, too, while the simple spirit-and-mixer drinker can delight in an expansive selection of bottles, particularly when it comes to rums and whiskies. There’s a decent bar snack menu with hits and misses—the salt and Sichuan calamari is definitely a hit, as it’s lightly battered and not greasy, but a recommended miss is the rather dried out and overly crisp pizza. A selection from a range of other seafood and meat options may fare better, with most designed for easy sharing. For the sweet-toothed, there are a handful of desserts that pair well with the selection of digestifs and ports—alternatively, you can match them with the cheese platter. 8
