Setting

Located on the third floor of the Hyatt Regency in Tsim Sha Tsui, the Chinese Restaurant is one of the most consistent Cantonese restaurants in the area. Guests entering must pass by the private dining rooms before reaching to the wide stretch of tables scattered across the carpeted space. While the restaurant is lacking a view, floor-to-ceiling windows add natural light in during the day. We recommend reserving the booth seating by the window. They are very popular for guests in the know and spacious for enjoying a good meal.

Food

The Chinese restaurant’s menu offers an abundant selection of food offerings from Chinese barbecues, starters, to mains divided into seafood and meat categories. We began with the signature steamed fresh green crab claw with glutinous rice, an individual serving of a single crab claw sat atop a shallow bed of glutinous rice. The lotus leaf enhanced the crab’s freshness and the portion size was just right. Stir-fried diced Japanese Saga beef with organic black garlic is impressive. The cubed beef is seared on all sides, while the black garlic cloves lend sweetness to the dish.

Smoked chicken with jasmine tea was a winner as well. Cooked in soy sauce and lightly smoked with the floral tea, the chicken was tender with the right hint of smoke and depth of the tea in the aftertaste, complementing the richness of the tender meat. The fried tofu and scallop balls with oyster sauce required lengthy preparation, and the mixture of tofu and scallops was a bit bland and needed the oyster sauce and extra seasoning to give it a lift in flavour. The Chinese Restaurant’s signature baked egg custard with glutinous dumpling is a creation combining the pineapple bun’s crust and base of a custard tart and glutinous rice dumpling. The filling of molten custard was sweet and buttery, and we recommend ordering them in advance as they are often sold out during dinner service.

Wine

Wine by the glass options are adequate at The Chinese Restaurant, though they are listed under the beverage menu which may be confusing to guests. The selection is modest with a good range of producers from both old and new world.

Service

Service at The Chinese Restaurant is on point and attentive. The staff are well-versed with the restaurant’s menu offerings, especially food and wine pairing suggestions and seasonal menu introduction. Dishes are thoroughly introduced as they are served and the staff is keen to offer suggestions for portion control.

A dinner for two including wine amounts to just under HK$2,000. The Chinese restaurant is a fine establishment with solid execution of Chinese food under a warm, homely setting.
